My family's telephone situation is very complicated, compounded further by the fact that my late father's small business has it's own phone system that needs changing; all these services are bleeding us dry for things we rarely use anymore.
We have 3 lines: Home, Business, and Spare/DSL. Home and Business are on a dual-line jack, Spare/DSL it's on it's own. We only ever use the Home line, the Business is mostly incoming calls, and the Spare is just for DSL since it doesn't work on the dual-line.
What I'd like to do is to stop paying for some of these services, but keep ownership of the phone numbers. Is there is some sort of digital voicemail service I can move the Business number to that is A: Reputable and B: reasonably priced or even free?
The spare number I'd like to keep if I can get it for free or really cheap (it's costing us $25 a month, and I can get DSL without a line for just $10 more a month anyway).
Also, since they're charging us each month for rental of our 2-line answering machine, reccomendations for a quality replacement we can buy and own would also be appreciated.
AT&T and Cablevision are the only telecoms in this area, and they can't offer me anything of the sort without paying more than I already am. I would have thought Skype offered a service like this, but they don't. I know google voice will eventually offer this for free, but they haven't even opened the beta to the general populace yet, let alone begun to add features like that.
