My mouse is an asshole in games. (Comp mouse, not a real mouse)

This has being going on for a while now.

My mouse is fine when I'm just clicking crap on the desktop or surfing or whatever, but while playing games it just goes nuts on me. Specifically, WC3, Quake, and Warsow. While I play WC3 it will randomly jump to the top or bottom of the screen and get stuck until I shake it loose. Playing Quake or Warsow (both FPS) it will start out fine, but after a few minutes it will be jumping and skipping all over the place, making the games impossible.

I thought it may just be the mouse (it's just a standard Logitech black optical model), but I've tried another mouse I have lying around (an old Wingman, which is USB), and it was doing pretty much the same thing. I've tried installing drivers for both, and I couldn't even get anything going with the Logitech mouse. I install Logitech's SetPoint program but there are no options to configure anything.

Before, I'd thought it might actually be a problem with my PS/2 port or something, but I'm not even using the same motherboard anymore and I still get the same problems.

This has become a real problem for me now, since 2 of my favourite games have become completely unplayable.

Anyone have any ideas?

Just to clarify, the same problem has been occurring with these two mice, but on different motherboards? And one uses PS/2 and the other uses USB?

    That's a good one.

What are you mousing on? Have you changed desks recently?

Is your mousepad surface kinda reflective?

    (buy a laser mouse).

They're both a laser mice. I use a pad. Same pad I've always used.

I didn't try the USB mouse on my last motherboard, but I've used both on this one and had the same exact problem.

I'm looking into my Quake problem hoping that it's just a problem with that application, even though I've never heard anyone complain of the same thing.

    WC3, though, still miffs me.

And I don't want to go out a buy a new mouse, again, since I already did just that to try and get around this problem and it got me nothing at all.

From your description, I don't think you have a laser mouse.

Alright, fine. Optical is technically different from a laser mouse.

But should it make a difference? I've used optical mice to play WC3 before -- hell I've used ball mice -- and this is not a sensitivity problem. It's just my mouse being a dick.

I guess I'll have to borrow a laser mouse from a friend and test that out, too.

Yeah, basically you can use a laser mouse quite happily on a mirror. An optical mouse will go batshit insane on the wrong surface, depending on which day of the week it is.

I think after a while the sensors on these mice tend to fuck up as well, not sure what causes it. You can try putting it on a sheet of white paper which may help things out. But basically if you've got a super cheap mouse, you shouldn't be surprised if it starts having issues.

Well, I've gone through opticals before. I know when they're passed their expiry date. What threw me off here was the it was 2 mice having the same problem in only one very specific circumstance. Like I said, I can do everything else just fine, it's only while playing WC3 and Q3 that I get this problem.

Hopefully I can borrow one over the weekend and confirm or deny this. :/

Laser mouse as suggested would be the best bet right now. I had this very same problem with a cheap OEM optical mouse before playing CS, I'd be running and next thing I'm looking at the ceiling and getting shot. What fixed it for me (keep in mind this was 4 years ago) was a dual scan optical mouse.
Essentially the issue is that when you move the mouse too fast, the sensor is not registering what you want it to do and instead decides to go insane.

on the offchance that it's not the mice it could be your video card or memory. memory leaks will cause your mouse to jump like that

It had better not be that. It had better not be either of those.
