Why are there no reviews around for this yet?

Though if this is a true port, it'll be awesome regardless.

Be careful what you wish for. We could have a Shiren situation again.

It feels like a true port. Gameplay and cheesy style of the original all hold. Inherent difficulty too. :)

Hmmm, tempting as it may be to wait longer for a lower price since I'll want to save this for a long trip I'll probably have to take this fall, I guess I better support this 100% with a early purchase because I have a bad feeling that if I don't Elite! for the DS will never happen.

this has been in my DS since I got it. It is a fairly accurate port but there are a few things missing. First, as someone else mentioned weapons don't need repair or anything so it seems that mechanical skill is pretty much useless. The other thing is there doesn't seem to be a difference between bandaging and healing, so I have no idea why they left the Doctor/Patient assignments in the game.

there also doesn't seem to be a way to reload your gun without firing it, but I'm not sure it takes any extra action points to reload. . .

Indeed. Given the scope of the original, it's pretty impressive how much they seem to have retained from the original.

So once you've cleared a sector, what's the easiest way to get the ammo, weapons and other gear in the sector? Do you have to manually get it all? That's what I've been doing and it's a pain. Also, how can you pick up pocket vests? Unless you send in a merc or two vest-less each time, it seems like someone already wearing a vest can't pick up a new one.

Working from my memory of the original on PC you don't have a choice but to collect things manually, remembering to keep an eye out for booby traps and mines.

I think you were able to pick up a spare vest and hold it in your off hand (probably only possible when using a single handed weapon).

I remember in JA2 you could simply bring up a screen for that sector which listed everything you'd seen that was available for you to take. Not sure if it's the same for JA1, but I'm guessing not.

You bastards! Now I have to give this a second try (I have the Steam version; couldn't figure it out so I gave up)

And also apparently I need to play Deus Ex again. Man, I sure hope no one mentions Alpha Centauri, or i'd have to reinstall and play it again...oh damn it! Damn it!

For the mechanical bit, isn't there the option of combining items together, like a scope and a gun? I thought a higher mechanical ability increases the chances of that succeeding?

So, where are people finding this? I haven't seen it ANYWHERE, and I was just at Fry's on saturday and picked up Steal Princess there, which is another game people are saying is hard to find (I haven't seen that anywhere aside from Fry's either). I want to get this, but is online my only option?

    There is.

It does. (And why can't Hector and Smoke just get along...)

Tallweirdo, that tip for holding spare vests in a merc's left hand worked great. I'm swimming in vests now!

I've been playing it quite steadily and another minor annoyance I found is that ammo doesn't always stack when you pick it up.

Say you've got a 4 pocket vest and you pick up a box of .38's now you've got 3 free slots. You pick up another box, and now you've got 2 free slots. Pick up 2 more and now you've got no free slots. Pick up a 5th box, and now it will stack. It's just really annoying because if you go to pick up a gun or something "No room"

I'll have to try combining something a couple times with someone with 0 mech to see if it does affect the ability to combine things successfully.

also, if memory serves me correctly you apply compound 17 to armor to get better protection? I can't seem to get that to work in this, anyone have any ideas?

I'm having a hard time figuring out precisely which pistol is better, the order that I see them drop it looks like its .38 < .45 < 9mm < .357 but conventional logic tells me it should be .38 < 9mm < .45 < .357 for damage/range and 9mm taking a slight edge over the .45 on accuracy or something.

finally, any idea on a basic strategy to start making money quickly? it seems like if I get 3 decent mercs (at around $1000 to $1800) and then fill the rest with the shit $500 or less characters and I'm already running out of money to pay my mercs by the 3rd day, taking usually 2 or 3 territories per day.

You can always stack similar ammo separately, up to 5, in the equipment screen. It's annoying that it doesn't do it manually, but at least you don't have to allocate all your inventory space to .38 cal bullets.

I wish I had answers to your other questions, especially on making money early. Anyone else?

just confirmed that low mech skill and steel pipe + gun mods don't work so well.

Have you tried molotovs and explosives made from gas cans yet?
