NPR is my default radio station whenever I drive anywhere of length. I love nearly every program on that station except for two exceptions.
The Story is quite possibly the most boring concept for a show ever. Hey I've got an idea! Lets interview Normal People! Which is fine until you realize those people are intensely, mind-numbingly boring. You can even tell in Dick Gordan's voice sometimes that hes out of things to talk about half way through the show.
Also, I simply cannot listen to Diane Rehm speak. She's a wonderful old lady who has some great content on her show, but I am horribly afraid that she's going to drop dead at any moment.
Rankenphile turned me on to this program called The Moth. It's true stories told live by a variety of people, many of them entertainers. It's pretty sweet and can be both hilarious and heart wrenching.

Also without a doubt NPR would not be half as good as it is without the interstitial music clips
Npr is so awesome. I listen every day at work and there is always a decent amount of great stuff on. Seattle even has "Weekday" by Steve Sheer (sp), which is about as great as Fresh Air but with local issues.

I love NPR so hard. When you google search my name, the only result that is honestly me is a teeny interview from City Room on Chicago Public Radio. I am inordinately pleased by this fact.
I enjoy The Story to a surprising degree. I got hooked on that and BBC World News when I was working 2-10/3-11 shifts downtown. And Science Friday is pretty much the single greatest concept in mass media.
That said, A Prairie Home Companion is like my own personal recipe for snooooores. I TRY to like it, and Keillor starts talking, and suddenly I've swerved into the wrong lane and I'm drooling on my seatbelt.
At least that was the case until I moved to Seoul, now I just listen to NPR podcasts while I work out.

Man, I barely ever post here anymore, I just lurk. This OP was awesome.
NPR is excellent in keeping news in perspective. For instance, on http://www.npr.org/ they are currently doing coverage on the China earthquake, one year later, to determine the impact on humanity. How many other news sources are covering this?
They also are covering the faict that even though the Obama adminstration called out AIG on executive bonuses, they have not taken any action after 3 months.
NPR and BBC have helped me release myself of the myopic vision of other newsmedia sources.
I listened to nothing but NPR when I lived in Dallas, but that's as much of an indictment on the rest of Dallas radio as it is an endorsement of NPR. Occasionally found an AM station playing decent old R&B records, but the DJ was a whackjob preacher denouncing gays or whatever in between songs.
Lucky here in Melbourne with two of the best community radio stations in the world. http://www.rrr.org.au/ and http://pbsfm.org.au/
I only subscribe to triple r though.

I hope you don't judge your US experience solely from Dallas, TX.
My work has me in front of a microscope 6+ hours a day so one of my biggest pleasures is being able to listen to the news on the radio. Music only does it for me for so long, and it's nice to be informed about current events throughout the day.
I catch many of my favorite programs via podcast, though.
This American Life, Radio Lab, Talk of the Nation Science Friday, The Moth, and others.

Wacky looking dude, but one of the best radio voices in the history of radio.
Not to mention putting out an entertaining variety show nearly every week, including "The News From Lake Wobegon." I could listen to Garrison Keillor talk for hours (and have, thanks to audiobooks and podcasts).

I'm fairly certain that I'm me, but honestly I don't think these are terribly uncommon opinions.
Also, even though keillor isn't the best entertainer in the world, I will agree that he has a great voice. I can't find a clip of it online, but I heard him recite The Raven once and it was probably the best reading of it I've ever heard.

edit: except for Ira Glass, who I had met in person before, and looks exactly like he sounds
this week's All Songs was pretty good with Art Brut, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, Akron/Family and Patrick Wilson
couldn't even listen to it because the dude kept not answering the questions, especially when contradicted

Goddamnit, it's powdermilk biscuits!
Made with whole wheat, they give people the strength to do what needs to be done!
Triple J is also my go to radio station for music, though it can get painfully indie on occasion. Overall though, it's pretty awesome.

gonna have to listen to the website today to see whose birthday it is
edit: also I'll put in car talk and those other programs in the op, but not pbs stuff because tv is laaaame
One of the better interviews I've seen was Charlie Rose interviewing Dustin Hoffman, and I normally find actors to be p boring.

I dunno, I like his singing sometimes.
The actress in the voice acting troupe is fucking annoying though. Every damn one of her characters.
Jason Ellis from 3-6 on XM52 Faction is hilarious.
But I have to pretend I'm a little retarded to enjoy it.
Yes... pretend...
