Requesting Online Multiplayer DS Recommendations

edited May 2009 in Games and Technology
I want to pick up a couple titles for my DS that I can play over the internets.

Not really sure what titles still actually have people that play them online (don't want to pick up a game to find out the online community is dead), so I need your guys advice.

What games do you guys recommend?

Animal Crossing still has a big community but all the "playing" you do online is just meeting up to trade items. You have to get involved with community forums to do anything online, there's no random match up.

Pokemon Platinum probably has an active online multi right now, but like AC it caters to really specific tastes; you either love it or you hate it.

Everyone cheats and hacks in Mario Kart.

There aren't really any big name online DS games, devs besides Nintendo just never got around to supporting it well. Even if I'm forgetting something and, say, CoD4 DS was online, I bet the online is basically dead. Even dead online can still have some hope though...but that means going to GameFAQs and begging for a game.

I like strategy games ... what about the Advance Wars series? Any of those online (and still have existing communties?)

Or the latest Final Fantasy Title (rings of something?) I almost bought it but I thought I'd check here first to make sure there will actually be people online to play against ...

Mario Kart DS is always good fun, even though it's unbalanced in skill. Planet Puzzle League is good as a game, but the multiplayer is pretty much dead.

Here's a resource to look at. More recent games are obviously more likely to not be dead yet, but in general I would say you're going to have to visit GFAQs or make a thread here if you want a game.

I forgot about Crystal Chronicles Echoes of Time! That will probably still have a community since you can play online with the Wii or DS (same game). It plays sort of like Diablo mixed with Kingdom Hearts.

The wiki shows that Advance Wars did have online. However remember that much of the "online" in these games is just item trading or message sending or useless stuff. I recommend reading reviews.

EDIT: Nevermind, Gauntlet DS is possibly cancelled I guess.

Basically DS multiplayer on the 'net is a barren wasteland. I wish it weren't so, but hey, it's Nintendo :(

Even I have to admit that I haven't played much online when it comes to DS games, though I could say the same for Wii games as well since I'm focusing on killing my backlog.

But, I can't imagine too much of a problem with random Mario Kart and Tetris matches. MKDS has still been selling crazy numbers according to the last few NPD's, and I can't see all of them cheating. And even if they do cheat, it's still not impossible to win. I've faced a guy in Tetris and he set himself up to have only "I" blocks. Despite his advantage, I managed to keep getting Tetrises (....Tetrii?) and roughly the same time as him. He eventually dropped out of the game.

But even if you do get the really good online DS games and still can't get a random match, you can always ask here to gather a few players.

At the very least, I recommend Worms: Open Warfare 2. Even if you never go online with it, the single-player portion and the hot-potato style multiplayer makes it worth it and then some.

Crystal Chronicles Echoes of Time I've been thinking of getting two copies ... one for me and one for my wife. Can we both go online and play with 2 other people? And the community is still alive and kicking?

Also you mentioned it is the same game as the Wii version. Graphically the same? I'm assuming the Wii version would have more bells and whistles.

Thanks for the advice so far guys ... My consoles are on the same TV as the one my wife uses for her shows so sometimes I just need to kick back with the DS ... I'm a multiplayer whore so I've been wanting to find some titles I can play around with while she's watching American Idol or The Hills

You mean like the voice chat in Metroid Prime Hunters and typed messages in Animal Crossing?

Anyway Bamelin, this is what Echoes of Time looks like on Wii:

    finalfantasycrystalchro.jpg

It may have extra texture filtering or something but it is the same game down to the bottom screen being displayed alongside the main one.

I really have no idea as to the community. You can play with your wife and invite two others, including people from this forum, there's a thread on the game somewhere.

I love these NDS titles online, although I cannot tell you how many players still play these online:

    Tetris DS
    Mario Kart DS
Prime Hunters (though I dunno if cheating has gotten out of hand now or not)
    StarFox Command
    Bleach DS
    COD WaW

Those are just what I enjoyed, but there are quite a few other good potential online capable NDS games that other people have. Also, there are a good chunk of NDS games with online leaderboards and level/content sharing features, but of course that's not the same thing as playing online multiplayer.

don't both those games only allow chat with people you've exchanged friends codes with though? that was/is the downfall of the ds' online play

If you mean the two of you playing with two people randomly matched up with you from the internet? Not really. You two can try to host/join at the same time, and hope to be paired together with one or two other folks, but no guarantees there.

If you've got friend codes for those people though (or played with them before and gotten a friend invite from them), then you're golden, as you can do a friends-only game.

Graphically they are almost the game. The Wii version has some very slightly more refined graphics, and you end up with two screens on your TV, which you use the wii remote to resize on the fly. Otherwise they are mostly identical.

Something to point out though, is that the game's netcode is generally considered to be horrible. Local multiplayer is supposedly fine from what I hear, but when playing over the internet, the 'visiting' players tend to experience terrible input lag, which can really hinder one's enjoyment of the game. The host has no problems, but for the connecting players, a half second input lag can make it quite tricky to time jumps and counter spells.

I'll second Tetris DS. Unfortunately it costs an arm and a leg due to its very limited print run.

But the one game I never have trouble finding matches for (it even looks for them for you!) is Jump Ultimate Stars. It's basically Smash for the DS.

Third for Tetris, the online play against random opponents is great for some short and quick gameplay.

Surprised Tetris DS would be rare, it's freakin Tetris online, how could they not print a gazillion of those cartridges o_O

My understanding of it was that they lost the license after the intial short print run, so there is only a limited number around.

Which is a damn shame, since Tetris DS is the finest Tetris game ever made.
