There was a Judge Dredd comic that was a parody of Calvin and Hobbes. It was about this somewhat unhinged kid with incredibly powerful psychic powers that could turn his stuffed toy into a murderous tiger, and used it to kill his abusive parents and various other people.

It was actually kind of dark. Funny though, in a "jesus why would anyone write this" sort of way.

The best comics were Peanuts, Calvin and Hobbes, and The Far Side.

Also, Garfield without Garfield is a stupid idea. You can make anyone look crazy if they think something is there that isn't. Garfield without Garfield's 'speaking' is a much better idea.

Every year my elementary school had a book fair.

And every year my mom would give me a little money to buy some books.

And inevitably I'd spend every cent of it on the new Far Side book and candy.

She stopped giving me money for the book fair after a while.

I will freely admit that I didn't want to poop all over the Peanuts parade and so I just skimmed the OP when it first appeared. It's not that I don't like Peanuts, it's just that... okay, I don't much care for Peanuts. Except for two particular holiday specials with which I think we all are acquainted.

But Calvin & Hobbes was my daily ritual with my Dad every morning until it ended. My copy of Attack of the Deranged Killer Mutant Monster Snow Goons is nearly disintegrating, and my snowmen always had three arms and multiple heads.

That and Pee Wee's Playhouse probably explain a lot, now that I think about it.

Peanuts IS responsible for this, though, which may or may not be on my iPod at this very moment.

old Peanuts strips can be pretty darn funny sometimes

it's definitely no Beetle Bailey or Blondie, strips that have never been funny and continue to exist only because removing them from the comics page would be too much trauma for the Greatest Generation to handle

    marmaduke2002444471024.gif

Marmaduke is a member of the Boy Scouts of America, despite being a large dog rather than a boy. He has developed the sole shared characteristic of all Boy Scouts: the compulsive need to help old ladies across the street, even if it means dropping everything you're doing (like being walked by your owner-man) and physically harming the old lady (in this case, by biting a chunk out of her arm).

Marmaduke's Owner-Man vainly attempts to exert control over the situation by doing a racist World War II-era impersonation of Hideki Tojo.

and I bet nobody remembers it but my favorite comic strip of all time was Bloom County
