So I just watched the first episode of Basquash. Other than Miyuki's amazing rack, what does this show have going for it?

    More characters with amazing racks?

Oh, yea, I guess sometimes these giant robots play basketball in the streets, and the moon plays MTV music videos.

And police robots who chase around the ones playing basketball shooting handcuffs from their wrists.

The basketball stuff doesn't really start to happen until midway of episode 4. Ep. 5 really showcases the great animation. 3 on 3 with robots with the whole city as the court? yes, please.

Until then it's boobs, yelling, and inuendo. Oh, and don't forget the princess who is mystified and drawn to the whole thing. Always gotta have one of those.

I don't think nearly enough people have watched Kaiba. I thought it was pretty good, though I'd expect a lot of people to not really be capable of liking it. It's a little odd, but quite well done.

Spice and Wolf is really good as well, if anthropomorphic wolf gods and 17th century monetary policy are your thing.

Xam'd: Lost Memories is fantastic. Good animation and music. It's kinda mechaish in it's plot. Kinda confusing without explaining a whole lot till the end, but the characters are good.

Toradora and Minami-ke were both quite good as well.

I can't believe I forgot about that. Such an amazing show. Go watch it now. Right now. Go ahead, I'll wait.

Toradora was not good. It was extremely mediocre but designed perfectly in order to make you want to keep watching despite its mediocrity.

Minami-ke, however, is pretty decent. The change of art style in the second season is a bit off-putting, but if you can get past Mako-chan, you can get past that.

I want something good, complete, and less than two years old.

This will likely filter out most of what I've seen.

Genre doesn't matter, the subjective feeling of awesome, neat, well crafted, etc, matters

Do movies work as well or just series?

Sword of the Stranger was pretty rad, awesome action, gorgeous animation and an alright story.

The fact that he picked Minami-ke over it cements that fact, especially when he mentions the god-awful second season. The first season was good, though. Season three was...largely mediocre.

Movies are actually better. Bite sized.

Ovas and shorts are fine too.

Minami-ke is better than mediocre. I'll take it over Toradora.

But the only reason I'm really continuing to watch it is because the cross-dressing shenanigans is too hilarious.

Toradora was a cliched but decent harem comedy until it hit the latter episodes, and then jumped the shark so fast my head was spinning. The writing really got atrocious at the end.

SEED is pretty serious actually. I don't really get how you could even argue otherwise. Sure, pop idol turned revolutionary in the end, but we're talking about a genre that has a whole "serious business" mecha title about singing and bad music!

Saying that SEED is a serious mecha anime is like saying that Samurai Deeper Kyo is a serious samurai anime. They have serious drama in them but they do not really treat the setting in a serious way.

So, topic: Embarrassing times to have people walk in on you while watching anime.

First, my friend lent me the two Eva movies to watch over spring break while I was home. So I'm sitting in my room, watching End Of Eva, not understanding a damn thing, and my mom walks in. Probably wanted to know if I wanted a sandwich or something. Except Rei's head is doing the crazy falling off thingy. She turns to me (not angrily) "What the heck are you watching?" My response: "I don't know either!"

Second one was at my school's anime club. We use the big lecture hall with the projector, so it's like being at the movies. I can't even recall what show it was, but it involved a mermaid. She got beached for some reason, so she's flopping around moaning and gasping for air. I think you can see where this is going. Janitor walks in. Janitor looks at screen. Janitor walks out.

We can have a cross event with the S&EM thread. Get pizzas, play some Halo, have a good time.

The only embarrassing time is when I was watching the GitS:SAC scene where the major had her crazy lesbian cyborg thing with that other chick to find out information or something and my dad walked in. In the anime it's more of a wink wink nudge nudge but I heard the manga has a bunch of crazy lesbian orgies.

Edit: Potentially embarrassing was when my dad freaking borrowed my Gantz dvd to see if the dvd player was working in the living room. I didn't know until afterwords when i noticed it was in a different place than where I left it.

Well, the first Ghost in the Shell manga does have one crazy lesbian sex orgy. And to his credit, Masamune both offered a rationalization to it and also admits, "...yeah, plus, I kind of wanted to draw a lesbian sex orgy. Expect more in the future!"

Thankfully, none of them made it into Dominion Conflict No. 1, so it's all good. It gets cut out in the big, colorful US release and replaced by something that makes ab it more sense in context (virtual reality vacation). If you weren't aware before, you'd probably never know.

The second manga for GitS takes it a lot farther, I'll leave it at that.

As for Stand Alone Complex...honestly, given uncomfortable a lot of audiences are with any form of homosexuality, I think it handled it in a pretty dignified fashion. The Major happens to like women. She has a long term (at least 2 year long) relationship with two other cyberized women, who presumably knew eachother before they knew her. If anyone snickers during the grand total of 3 minutes they spend on that in the first season, you say "Oh, grow up you freaking prude! It's the Twenty-First century, everyone's at least a little gay, Jesus!"

I know that's what I told my dad when we watched it together, anyway.

It's nothing but reams and reams of technobabble and countless drawings of naked or semi-naked women. Just page after page. And lots of footnotes for the technobabble too, and endnotes, Masamune takes that shit way too serious when I'm sure 90% of the people buying were just looking at the illustrations.

This doesn't sound too hard actually. Azumanga was the premier anime shown in my highschool's anime club one year.

Now Kodomo no Jikan that's the impossible task.

    ----

I've started watching Gunslinger Girls - Il Teatrino. It's isn't the change in art style that gets me (it's not too bad of a change actually but quite inferior to the first season's very artistic look), it's that the entire casting has been changed from the first season. Some of the characters still sound okay but it's very strange to me right now. Feels like a Minami-ke S1 --> S2 transition.

Prettty much. To its credit, the actual story part of it, which is there, believe it or not--it's still about 200% the story you'll find in a lot of the cyberpunk or action we get today (then again, the competition is pretty damn weak in this department and GitS already had an established audience with certain expectations back then).

The technobabble is a problem if you can't handle it, but it's basically GitS expanded on. Not that hard or incomprehensible. Honestly, I thought the weakest part of Man-Machine Interface was the destruction of GitS's awesome sense of humor.

Then again, that's probably why I thought the Oshii movie sucked. Okay, maybe not sucked, but wasn't that good. And I love Oshii's Jin-Roh and Patlabor. It obliterated any humor that was in the manga, even in the Puppeteer Arc.

    EDIT: Ah. Top.

You know, it can be kinda hard to sell Potemayo as something a 25 year old should be watching.

Try selling Azumanga without people hitting the Chris Hansen button.

A episodic comedy taking place in a high school staring a group of girls?

    Sign me up.

I loved Azumanga Daioh--though I can't explain precisely why. I suppose it's because I could relate to the experiences somewhat (I'd just arrived in the US to finish high school), and because I enjoy that sort of sense of humor. No one sold it to me, deliberately--I just heard about it and thought, "Wow, I could like that." And I say this as someone who hates most high school comedies--or at least the high school part of them.

Though selling it to other people can be hard.

You haven't watched enough. Minami-ke S2 is nowhere near as fucking terrible as Il Teatrino.

If you get past episode 4 or 5, post about it in the thread. I think you'll be the first here to do so.

I actually had the Azumanga manga out on my coffee table for a while. I think it's pretty harmless.

Azumanga Daioh is the only straight-up comedy that Japan has produced that is funny to anyone outside that country

And really, it only starts getting good after the first episode or two

I dunno, Shin-Chan's dub has its moments.
