I'm looking at either a V-Strom 650, KLR-650, or a Versys. I'll be riding all of them before I buy, but I'm leaning most towards the V-Strom right now. I'll try riding the V-Strom DL1000, too. Mostly just for kicks, heh. I'm 6'6", and these bikes fit me pretty well.
In any case, with the exception of KLRs, most used bikes in my area are within ~$1000 of a new bike. Unless I can find a better deal, I'll end up buying new. I am familiar with negotiating for car prices, but about how much below sticker should I be trying to get an $8000 bike for? I'd imagine it's a bit different.
Any reason you're leaning toward the Dual-Sport variety of motorcycle? Just wondering.
I went to Kelly Blue Book for a general approximation, and it seemed fairly accurate to the market (on Craigslist at least). This page has decent info for anyone thinking about buying new or used. And of course, I re-present the Bible for buying used.
(Un)fortunately, a bike holds its price very well. Even more so for smaller bikes. Used bikes do tend to be closer in price to the new bikes compared to cars. Cheap cars also won't get you killed as easy as a cheap bike. I'd say it comes down to the seller. If they took good care of the bike, it might actually only be a little less than buying new. You could buy a used bike and re-sell it next year for a small loss (or none at all), assuming all you did was put some miles on it.
They fit me a lot better than sport-standards like the Bandit. I'm not a huge fan of the KLR's looks, but they are big enough for me to sit on comfortably. Plus it's nice because there are a lot of service roads around here.
The blue book listings are well below the asking prices around here. I guess the problem is that going price is 15% above blue book this time of year, and 15% below at the start of winter.
Yeah, now is when everyone wants a motorcycle, so you won't find very many deals around.
I bought mine in October for a good price, and it basically sat around for 5 months. Now is when everyone's getting their bike in for repairs to start riding.
