"Display Driver STopped Responding..."

After having this laptop (HP Pavillion dv9730nr) for exactly one year now, I have begun to receive this message lately: "Display Driver Stopped Responding: nvlddmkm". What typically happens is that the freeze will either lock up for 20-30 seconds, or it will go black for an equal amount of time. Then, when it resumes normal display operations, the aforementioned message appears. Sometimes it will happen so frequently within a short amount of time that I'll get a blue screen of death, and the laptop will automatically restart itself.

The graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce 8600m GS, and I just downloaded the newest driver for it (released in early March 2009) 7.15.11.5665. According to my Google searches, this appears to be a common problem with NVIDIA cards, but was really prevalent back in 2007 when Vista started to become more widespread. But for my computer to just start doing this out of the blue... well, the only thing that I can think of that changed is that I downloaded and installed VLC, but I have a hard time thinking that VLC had anything to do with this new display problem.

After I installed this latest driver update from NVIDIA, things seem to be running well... so far. Although when I turned the computer on, it did do the whole "Display Driver..." bit once. Does anyone have any insight on what can be done to fix this problem? I reformated the laptop, and installed this latest driver for the graphics card... other than that, I am at a loss as to what more I could do. :?:

Sounds like a bad card. If you're under warranty, call HP and have them replace it.

Nvidia had a recall of 8600 cards not too long ago, looking into that might be your best bet.

Quite possibly overheating, driver problem or a bad card. Problem likelihood in that order.
