Fun fact: the earliest reference to Bitcoin on these forums was in 2011. Over seven years ago. It is hard to believe that it would contribute so much to global warming from such small beginnings.

    Holy shit I remember this.

Looking back at the things "Melissa" told me at the time, she was definitely describing either asexuality or demisexuality to me and I just didn't have the frame of reference to get it.

But also, separately, fuck that guy at gaming club.

Bitcoin's massive contributions to global warming are largely because of Chinese Bitcoin mining on coal-powered grids. You could look at literally any heavy computing task in China and say "this is driving global warming."

So, yesterday afternoon I noticed some kidney pain. Figured I had some stones growing (I have a kidney disorder that makes it super easy for me to develop cystine stones). No big deal, I just up my dosage of a supplement that makes my body alkaline, and the stones dissolve in time. A couple hours later, it was becoming a lot of kidney pain. I'd say about halfway to the real pain of passing a stone. Uncomfortable, but not unmanageable.

Then I noticed my urine was very bloody.

Okay, that's new. And that sucks.

Figured I'd wait until the morning and see how I feel. No different. Called in to work, and called the clinic to set up an appointment. They recommended I go to the ER.

I really, really don't want to go to the ER for this. They can't do anything about it short of giving me a bunch of pain killers, and it still wasn't the unbearable pain of actually passing a stone. Decide to wait longer.

Fast forward to now, my urine is no longer bloody, and the kidney pain is very slight. As I expected - this has happened before. I won't actually pass the stone (That's only happened to me once). I'll take the supplement and whatever stones are in my kidneys will go away. After a while I'll lower the amount of that supplement I take (It's expensive, and the nephrologist who prescribed it said I only need to be on it when I have stones) and around the decade long merry go round I go.

Jumping to random places in my post history is a real trip.

I wish I could jump to all the random stories like that one. I completely forgot about "Melissa" (and "Victoria"), it's neat to be like "oh yeah, that thing that happened..."

Thanks, yeah. :) I may be somewhat irresponsible about it with not going to emerg, and who knows. Before it has a chance to dissolve, I may actually pass the stone, and won't that be fun.

Right now, though, it looks like I'm headed back to normal. I'm drinking as much water as I can stomach just to help wash my system out, though.

The main bitcoin forum was dead set on brigading us to correct us too.

I remember stumbling upon it while doing a search on google for penny-arcade to reference an old post because the phpbb stuff was fucking atrocious for searching.

It still comes up over on some of them occasionally when they stumble on our wrongheaded ideas on how bitcoin is fucking worthless.

Some significant but unknown/incalculable portion of Chinese Bitcoin use is to pseudonymously subscribe to VPN services to circumvent the great firewall.

That said, I do think that cryptocurrency speculation is stupid, and carbon emissions for speculation is extra stupid. So I'm not saying "Bitcoin is all good." I just don't think that cryptocurrency as a method for circumventing drug laws in the US or censorship in China is morally bad. But that's a deeper philosophical issue: I just can't summon much personal outrage over people breaking laws that I see as unjust.

I don’t know or think it was you.

There’s two sides to that coin. Russian oligarchs use crypto to circumvent sanctions, and much of the things crypto is being used to purchase are not so morally innocent as drugs.

Our community here does trend more against cryptocurrency & blockchain than I prefer, and I do think a lot of that is driven by prejudice & misconceptions.

But I also understand the negativity because fervent cryptocurrency evangelists are silly and aggravating.

I figure they'll do at least as well as a transformers movies, so an inexplicably large amount of money. They might end up being good and end up making near Avengers level money and we'll finally see the that traitor to mankind brought to justice.
