You guys are right to dig on that PR guy's use of "cinemaction", but that tech demo looked awesome in most other respects. And now Relic's doing it? This is now my most wanted game.

Well, tied with AvP 3, at least.

Though... to go a bit Goomba, the naming for these games is a bit lackadaisical. First Warhammer 40k: Fire Warrior, and now Warhammer 40k: Space Marine? Couldn't they have thought up something a bit more memorable and less uh... obvious and perfunctory?

Yeah it's a funny choice considering Space Marine has become almost like a catchphrase for unimaginative action games. Although I guess these guys have been called Space Marines for a while.

So um, just watched the video... almost had an orgasm. They took everything cool about DoW's sync kills and stuck em all into that game, apparently. Also, did anyone else think that the Orbital Bombardment there was a little more powerful then the one in DoW 2?

Oh, and of course... if this is only coming to consoles, I will murder someone. I really will. But Relic wouldn't do something like that. I still have faith in the God Emperor.
IGN has revealed their first look at Relic’s next game, an action-RPG for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3!

The repetition got to me. All games are inherently repetitious to some degree. Most don't reuse the same maps over and over again, only maybe tilted 90 degrees in the other direction to try to make you think it's a different map.

I remember that feeling I had when I realised the maps were rotated. It made me sad. Surely it wouldn't be terribly difficult/time-consuming to crank out a decent SP map for this game. I mean sure a MP one has to be balanced for resources and terrain and so on, but the SP maps aren't made for skirmish, they're made for just a linear progression through the map (for most of the levels anyway). Just chuck in a building and some dudes to kill. Then at the end put a dude who has like a billion hitpoints.

That Space Marine game Relic is working on isn't the same project as the other one. They didn't take it over, it's a whole new thing. From a THQ staffer posting on Relicnews:
The old Youtube video was for an action title Studio Aus was working on. This is a totally different project, though it does share the same name as the leaked video used.

The combat stuff is all in game (the bits of the marine with his helmet off etc are cinematics though)

The game looks amazing and is gory as hell so i think you will all love it :)

So don't worry, somebody somewhere is still dedicating themselves to providing you with all the cinemaction you can handle, it's just not Relic.

-edit: Actually "was working on" seems to suggest the other project might be dead now.

Singleplayer was mostly good. I didn't care about map rotation (the only one that actually gets rotated is the Typhon Arena), but was more annoyed at how many missions devolved into, "slowly pull everything," because of the way the scoring system worked. At the moment, they have a sort of "Kill Ten Rats" Action RPG thing going on for everything except Defence missions, Angel Gate and the McGuffin Array. I really hope with later campaigns they go deeper into that style of gameplay than just hunting down and killing everything bit by bit. You know, break away from the old Starcraft design of, "here are hundreds of units and bases, now slowly work your way through them all carefully."

In fact, in general, the scoring system is really bad. In order to maintain good score, and level up - which is what everyone wants - you have to clear an entire map without losing any troops, in an average amount of time. 5/5/3 is your aim for most missions and will get you the extra 2 deployments in almost all cases. You're only really looking at 5/5/5 in the later Defence missions (assuming the waves don't bug or whatever causes you to kill every attacking unit that comes to you and only get 40-60% killed on your score). Resilience system is a mess since they've got the old burst damage problem (insta-kills from Warlock/Seer Council/Farseer/Tankbusta aren't fun; I don't mind the insta-gibs you can avoid e.g. the aoe from the Avatar and the various Charges/Line Attacks etc. so much). Similarly, the stat for % troops killed is silly. Change it to (normalised) kills per minute perhaps, so that it doesn't conflict so horribly with the Speed stat?

The Shrine system, while good, causes problems because very quickly you should be getting rid of your Tyranid infestation on every planet except Calderis (which you can get to zero provided you get Tyranid missions there; I have a Calderis on nearly full Infestation because I've gotten nothing but Eldar/Ork missions despite having every secondary objective held). This in turn means that you don't get the Brood Nests which I think are actually quite interesting as secondary objectives go.

Beyond that, a way of ensuring you get loot relevant to your troops would be nice. I'm way over 100k and so far the only weapon I've got that I really wanted is the Dreadnought Assault Cannon. I want the Heavy Bolter and the Terminator Assault Cannon to complete my loadout and become absolutely untouchable. Unfortunately, grinding Defence missions - against [strike]goddamn Seer Councils[/strike] Eldar usually - is the only way forward.

After all that criticism, it's only fair to add that I love the stat system (though I only just realised that your stats do improve past the cap if you get stat-improving gear) mostly, with the exception of Melee for Avitus, and Thule distributing his points into Melee if you do his mission too late. Relay Beacons are cool. The Troops themselves rock, although invincible Terminator Thaddeus is a tad on the silly side: q-spam ftw! And it's nice they balanced the grindy part of the endgame so that you can basically kill all the x-day missions provided you get 3 extra deployments every two days (and that you have a second chance to get the third deployment on the second).

I think the best missions were the ones that were relatively small and featured Tyranid spawning pools all over the map. It was pretty much constant warfare from the second you landed and your squads were often under assault from all sides. You had to hold your positions against the horde whilst sneaking a squad in around the back to take out the pools.

Or just send cloaked Cyrus with detpacks. But really, where's the fun in that?

They did .5 damage more now. So instead of confetti it's, uh, really fast razor-confetti.

And then you mass them and only lose to plasma spam because they are still better and cheaper than warp spiders.

Cyrus is the best with a sniper rifle, he can oneshot anything and do pretty huge damage to bosses.

Second, Thaddeus is a monster despite the melee tarkus thing being in vogue. Once you get him in terminator armour he is literally invincible due to the after jump/teleport invincibility ability, and the massively reduced cooldown on jump/teleport in the teriminator armour.

With a little micro you can make it so he doesnt take damage basically, and of course with thunderhammers he hits like a truck against infantry and vehicals.

Yeah, Thaddeus has a 1/2 second window in which his squad members can take damage and as long as you're spamming q like a madman he stays invulnerable all the time. It's pretty much the only saving grace against SEER COUNCILs.

Yeah but simply appearing out of thin air in front of someone just doesn't have the same sense of awesome as falling on them with all the force truck dropped from 50 ft.

My assumption is that the last mission is a subset of the 'Random Loot' missions (as opposed to the 'Deterministic Loot' missions). So it just gets assigned some random loot as a reward as part of the system. Rather than have Relic assign loot to every mission, a random loot mission set just lets them have a mission class they put all the missions they don't need to give players specific loot from and it'll generate level-appropriate loot for you.

I think it's because it'll be carried forward in the next addon. After you've finished the campaign, you've got a separate "complete" savegame created. I can't really see any other reason for that except to carry through your mans and equipment later on.

Well, sometimes-much like shuriken platforms-if you manually target the rangers onto something, the other two non-sniper guys will run forward into firing range. And then get eaten alive by fucking sluggas because they'll automatically engage the sluggas in melee once they get close enough to charge.
