Computer slowdown

Hey guys,

My computer has started doing some weird stuff recently. The longer the computer is on (it's never on for longer than a day), the more Windows struggles with opening folders, particularly big folders. You'll try to open them, and it just hangs. The window will become unresponsive. Sometimes the new folder will open 30 seconds later, sometimes it's 10 minutes or more. Sometimes I have to end explorer.exe to get them to close.

My suspicion is that my hard drive is dying, but I wanted to see what you guys thought. I've defragged in the past two weeks, haven't error checked the disk in forever.

I'm pretty sure a dying hard drive will usually give you errors about bad sectors, cyclic redundancy checks, etc.

The best way to test this is to put in a second drive with a clean install of Windows on it and boot to that drive, accessing your files off the hard drive you suspect of dying. If you get weird errors and the same slowdown, then it's definitely the drive.

Otherwise it sounds to me like you're running some program that has a memory leak or you have some malware. I don't know how computer experienced you are to be able to look for these things.

Oh, the other thing that happens sometimes is that programs just won't open. I'll launch them, they'll show up in the processes list, but they won't actually load for sometimes as long as 10 minutes.

Would I be getting drive errors during normal use, or only when I ran scandisk or something?

    Both.

It sounds like you have a malware infection.

    1. Errorcheck the disk.
    2. Scan for malware.

If it's still slow at this point, it may be time for a format. While 10 minutes seems a bit extreme, it's a good idea once every year or two (depending on your usage habits) to wipe everything clean. I could be wrong here, but I don't think dying hard drives usually make themselves known by slow performance.

    Nope, they just die.

Other than maybe, if you're really fucking lucky, you get a CRC error on bootup and reboot fixes it.
