I couldn't stand being a marine, would never get any weapons or gear I could actually use.
Always thought it would be better if there was a class based system in place for the humans, who could then get upgrades for their gear via the commander. That way if you wanted to use a shotgun and welder, you would always have them. Even if they weren't as strong/fast as the upgraded commander version.
There are a few servers set up with bots exclusively. There is one named "Marine practice" or something like that. Hop on there and try out commander mode. Its good for learning the interface and tech tree. The shortcut system took me a while to figure out, but once you do its very useful. Being commander is a frustrating and difficult job, as everything the marines do depends on you. But it's also the most fun way to play the game imo. A mic is a huge bonus for a commander, but if you don't have one brief text commands and the waypoint system is perfectly workable.
We ran into a wierd bug involving voip and commander mode. People in the command chair were unable to transmit depending on which key they had voice chat bound to. Middle mouse button seems to not work. I have mine bound to 't' and have had no problems. 'v' is not advisable for commander, as that is also the recycle structures shortcut I forget who found that out the hard way yesterday, he told us about it the game after.
I had a lot of fun playing this over the weekend, though I am unbelievably terrible at it.
I played it a lot when it was new, but it's been years and I was surprised how completely I forgot how to play the game. As a result, I tried to play marine as much as possible because it meant I only had to follow orders.

"Ok guys, I'm researching Heavy Armor."
"...Well, shit, there goes the prototype lab."
The number of people who wander off by themselves as marine even as you yell at them to stay in a group is astounding
ESPECIALLY when the aliens are known to have fades/oni, meaning leaving the herd can mean death. When the comm says to stay together, he means it!

I don't really know the who's-who around here, but if someone wants to raise their hand with your SteamID (and preferrably have AMXX experience) I'll add a few admins.

Sticking with the team is something I do naturally, though there was several cases where I'd lag a little to poke my nose down a hall.. only to have someone bark at me to stay with the group.
I kept quiet about it each time, but I wanted to shout at these people. Checking our flank does not mean I'm wandering off on my own, dude. The advance notice that bad guys are coming could save your life, so save your complaints until I screw up.
man re-researching all those upgrades when you die as an alien is a pain in the ass.
It used to cost res every time you did it.
It still does if you aren't a skulk, afaik.

'Sticking together' doesn't mean bunch up in a chewy wad of marine flavored skulk treats. Staying in a clumped up group is a good way to get gassed. Or at the very least a skulk will start going beserk around everyones feet and everyone ends up blocking each others' shots. I've been yelled at for keeping some distance too. Trust me its better to be spread out with good lines of sight to each other.
Firing from a distance away makes that skulk chomping on your friend easy pickings. Especially if your friend is bunny-hopping like a madman trying to stay alive.

So did I.

Ok, so I went to buy half-life because I don't have it for my account. So I go and try to buy it in steam, I put it in my cart, click on the "have read blah blah" thing, and click continue. It then gives me an error message, telling me I have to have things in my cart to buy them. No matter how many I times I try, no matter how I try, it never shows up in the checkout. So, I go to the steam site to see if I can do it there. When I try to log in however, it tells me my account information is wrong. I know I don't have the name wrong, but I figure since it's been automatically signing me on for a long time, I might have a different password than I remember, so I try and find out what my password is. According to the steam site, neither my account name OR my email address (and I even changed it to see if it would work) are being recognized by Steam.
Anyone have any ideas what might be causing this?

What you think is your username might just be your alias. My username is actually my email, have you tried using that?

Well, I tried that, but I'm pretty sure that's not it. My steam account automatically logs onto steam, and it's "Bloodhawk91's account" (it's an old account, I've changed the name I use twice since I made it) so I can still play games (so far as I know) but I can't buy anything on steam, and I can't log onto the steam site.

Are you talking about the steam support site? If so, your user name/pw may not be the same. I had to register seperately for the support site, and I used a different name/pw from my steam login for security reasons.
I also use automatic login, and when I have had manual login troubles in the past it's usually because I am entering the wrong password.
EDIT: If online help is not giving you results, maybe it's time for an old fashioned phone call?

I played my first game of Natural Selection today. It was awesome, however there weren't many people playing at the time so I imagine it will be more awesome when we have more people. I sure have no idea what I'm doing.
The biggest issue with the last few games i played is 4v4 is so stacked in the aliens favour the marines didn't raelly stand a chance. We had a decent showing with the 3v3, but then JJ left and we were fucked.

Stick with it, it has a steep learning curve but when you know what you're doing and it all clicks you'll have a lot of fun.*

Also, Gerbil your mic is a little low for me. It was difficult to hear you when things got dicey.
Okay Sirot I joined the group, add me when you can.
Let's plan for a game tonight around 10pm EST. I won't be around until about midnight but feel free to start without me! I've told peeps over at TheVille and F7Lans so we should be able to get a decent crowd.
If anyone wants, I'd be up for giving a Commanding 101 lesson after the main gaming has ended. If you are serious about Commanding I highly recommend getting used to the Commander UI hotkeys.
Yeah the game really isn't designed for 4v4. 6v6 or 8v8 is the sweet spot, 10v10 is pretty much the limit of what is fun I think. Small games are really heavily favored for Aliens because of their resource model, and larger games are all about Marines because 1.) again, the Alien resource model fails with 10+, and B.) jetpack marines are everywhere, killing everything.
EDIT
Thanks Sirot! I've added the event for tonight. I know all about Steam events/announcements and I agree, Events are better. Hope to see everyone there.
There's a lot of big issues. The player count being one, the insane learning curve being another.
I wonder how the game would have been if in-game voice technology had been a few years more advanced, in terms of new players learning the ropes. In TF2 for example people use voice communication a lot in my experience, and the team that communicates well usually succeeds. I remember back when I played, very few people used voice, and again, the people who did usually did better.
I am really curious what changes will be made to make NS2 more friendly to new comers.
If the bots weren't so retarded, I'd like to see them filling out games a lot more.
Marines seem ideal to have bots, just because of the commander role. Seems reasonable that bots could cope with taking orders pretty well. Alien bots, not so much, but you'd think they'd do better than hanging out in their hive and occasionally sending a skulk to the human starting point.
I added Whichbot which seem to play Aliens better than the RCBot does, but I still find that they aren't as aggressive as they should be. The Marine bots aren't bad, sometimes they forget what they're supposed to do and get lost, and they can't navigate ladders to save their lives. I wish that Hivemind AI was developed further since they were pretty good for Aliens, but it was discontinued and never supported Classic mode.
It depends on what your team is currently doing. You can only have 1 type of upgrade chamber per hive, and you are limited to building what your current hives allow.
For example, if we have 1 hive and I drop a Sensory chamber because I am a newb and don't know that going Sensory first is full of fail, then my team is locked to using only Sensory chambers for the time being. We only have 1 hive, and that hive is locked to Sensory chambers. When we build a second hive, we now have a second upgrade chamber. If you then drop a Defense chamber, now we can build both Sensory and Defense chambers.
As a side note, the type and number of chamber also determines what evolutions you can have as a life form. If you have only Defense, then you are limited to Defense upgrades. The number of those chambers determines how powerful that upgrade is, to a maximum of 3. This is what the icons are on the right side of the screen, and why they are stacked when you have enough of them.
EDIT
Also I hope I don't have to point out that you can only build when you are a Gorge. I am pretty sure you know this but just want to state the obvious for everyone's benefit.

Yeah, I suck at commander.
I am going home and installing this tonight. I used to be a pretty good commander, but quite frankly I just wanna be an alien and ambush you guys.
I'd love to see some footage of NS2 in action.
I find marines hard to kill as anything, which is why I always play gorge or lerk. Melee is just too disorienting for me I guess.
