I have noticed a lot of turret spam in our games, and it made me smile because I had not seen that for a very long time. I think turrets do have their place in small games (4v4 and below) simply because there are not enough bodies to go around. A turret factory+ 3 turrets= shotguns for most/all of your team, keep that in mind.
When I was learning commander in a 1v1 game earlier last night, I made turret spam like you wouldn't believe. I think I had 10 turrets in the room with the commander chair. I would have built more, but people started showing up and my single RT couldn't keep up with the demands. Eventually the server started populating, and once the onos showed up the turrets went down in about 30 seconds.
Granted, they had 3 hives, but still. I was hoping they'd kill at least one.

Game crashed but was still going to lose.
Please Onos, please.
Never get redemption. It's crap.
It was good times to play again though. Ping is pretty reasonable on that server as well. Will play again when I get time. Definitely need more people. I fell into my default stance of building and supporting, which in a 3vs3 didn't help a lot.

So yeah, in some sort of defiance of natural laws, I just commanded two marine wins in low-pop games.
The first could be written off as a fluke, the direction I was pushing RTs included their hive, so I went shottyrush, and it worked.
Second round saw the aliens getting all three hives, but I got a heavy train through to a hive, sieged it, trained to the next hive, sieged IT, then took the last hive the old-fashioned way. Many onos died during this, even before we had heavies.

That was because they didn't bother getting carapace or regeneration. Redemption is so crap and ensured that they couldn't keep consistent pressure like if they had regen. I thought we had won for sure when I was behind an onos spamming heal like mad and thinking "this is over". Then he disappeared all of a sudden and I was just like !!!!!.
Then he told me he had redemption Shortly after that you guys got heavy armour and without enough aliens we couldn't do a lot about it.
Edit: Right before that though I got raped however, as a gorge isn't much of a match for a marine I'm afraid to say. Especially with 200 ping.
At least I ate DeadonArrival. In the end, that's all that mattered.

I totally did all the hard work.
Also a protip for everyone - we all know that 'lame fields' or wols (walls of lame) which are actually offense, defense, and sensory chambers clumped up to support each other are annoying. The Marine answer to this is the trusty grenade launcher. The trick is that the grenade launcher guy, usually clad in heavy armour, stands in front of the other guys and removes the lame as the guys behind him weld him so he takes no real damage.
Do not unload into chambers with your HMGs, supporting people! You may think you're helping, but HMGs are actually just as bad against chambers as LMGs are. Which is crap. You need to save your ammo and make sure that your gun is loaded and ready in case aliens show up to defend their lame against the grenade launcher guy. We're all fucked if you're reloading and the grenade guy dies to skulk/lerk/onos/fade/stiff breeze.

There hasn't been a WoL built since they nerfed chamber stacking. I don't build them anymore.
Though carpeting the whole map in sensory chambers still makes for happy fun times. I have a screenshot somewhere of Neophyte's handiwork. :P

Speaking of perks, what do you guys normally roll for your Kharaan upgrades?
Depends entirely on what I am and my mood.
I almost never get redemption unless I'm fade and it's an immensely tight game. Typically it depends on start as well.
I like to play skulk/sometimes gorge and late game lerk (which was my position in the clan I played in).
Sensory -> Movement -> Defense
Focus -> Silence (early game skulk)
Or
Cloak -> Adrenaline (Gorge) -> Usually Regen to hide in vents as lerk and pew pew.
Movement -> Defense -> Sensory
Adrenaline -> Carapace -> Cloak (Gorge usually with this)
Celerity -> Carapace (Skulk) -> Suicide fun happy times (so not much usually if it's hive 3).
Adrenaline -> Regeneration -> Cloak for late game lerking
etc.
I vary what I'm doing depending on the team needs. I basically build things and am usually skulk/gorge. If I feel like it, I'll go lerk late game to assist in attacks (although I tend to stay skulk/gorge all game).

I always go for celerity, and depending on what I'm playing, redemption (as gorge) or carapace for anything else.

If I go gorge in a tight game I use redemption. Those 10 res you can save by not having to re-evolve can be a big difference. But I don't tend to be always gorge, usually only every so often and then back to skulk.
I really hate small games because I don't get to skulk enough.
I don't really use higher lifeforms much, so I don't have any 'normal' selections for them.

The "General Skulking" is pretty much what I like to roll, but if I'm dedicating myself to RT harassment I'll pull Cloaking instead. Bite, bite, bite, run in a corner and wait for a Marine to get aspirations of welding. Repeat until desired tenderness reached.

I generally play Lerk since I've never been great in a firefight (I can't judge the distance of my bite), so I usually follow Fades and Onos around to gas/umbra. So for Lerk I usually go Regen, Adrenaline, and either Focus or SoF depending on how the game is going and everything.
One of the best things about NS is that the aliens are so versatile. Every upgrade has its place, even scent of fear (although its widely regarded as the most useless upgrade). Each upgrade lends itself to a certain playstyle, even within classes.
For example I usually choose celerity and regen as an onos, because I like to be mobile and stay in the field harassing all points of the map. But I've seen people use a silenced, cloaked onos to great effect as well. Even a stomp spamming adrenaline onos is useful in certain situations ie. anti heavy train defense.
There's rarely a situation where I would say never get a certain upgrade as a given lifeform. Marines are the ones that have definite no-nos. Aliens have much more leeway.
For fades, adrenaline, carapace and either SoF or Focus. This depends a lot because the higher rate of fire with a normal attack does more damage against buildings than Focus, so if I'm doing some hit and run against buildings I go with SoF to avoid marines and if marines don't have armor upgrades it's always Focus.
Onos, Celerity, Carapace and SoF. I like knowing if I'm going to run into 5 marines if I turn a corner.
So I made a shortcut to the desktop and put XP compatibility mode on and now there's no acceleration. I would've tried right from the start it but HL being a steam game it took me a while to realize that's even an option.
So yeah I played a while on g4b2s and mostly just died as a skulk and spammed umbra as a lerk. I tried the marines for a bit and sucked even more. The amount of suckage might be related to the fact that last time I played was few weeks after the release of combat, whatever version that was. But I had all kinds of fun I haven't experienced in years, there's something really unique about NS.
So is this a trail by fire game? It sounds hard and complicated, but also intriguing

I get angsty at people.
But I'm not as bad as I used to be :P
Mostly I get annoyed when people take redemption as something big and nasty when I am gorge healing them. Mostly because I am dead the second they teleport out and some marine sodomises me with a shotgun.
Zombie, the worst thing you can do wrong is not ask questions. Considering there is probably 30-40 people who play on this server total, we're more than happy to show people the ropes, but if you press buttons just to see what happens, then yeah you probably will get some people angry at you.
Also, don't think that you will be able to command effectively quickly. I'm sure some people, myself included, will be able to give you a lesson versus some Bots if you're interested in getting comfortable in the chair.
Played in a few intense rounds. We had a full server going for a while there, I think the steam events people are making are really effective.
Man do early lerks suck, as do early shotties. If one team goes for those early, and the other team doesn't counter they are in for a world of hurt. I've noticed the overall level of play has gotten better. Veterans are remembering and new people are learning. It makes for more exciting games with lots of back and forth.

The best thing to do as marine is to listen to teammates. If the marines coordinate and talk to each other they're unstoppable.
If the game ends before the timer reaches 45 minutes, there wasn't nearly enough of it going on.
Well clearly you guys aren't following the zomg srs bznz pro guide to NS which states that all matches should be over in less than ten minutes with precision teamwork and omfg what are you doing having fun and screwing around

I find the fighting fun. I don't even care if I lose, as long as we put forth a good effort and had the enemy questioning whether they'd win or not.
