The transition team has drafted a new document of Guiding Principles and New Rules for our community. These rules will go into effect on November 25. 2024.
I used to love spending hours playing X-Com, Master of Magic, Master of Orion I & II, Command & Conquer, etc. Recently I tried playing Sword of the Stars and at an hour or two a night I just can't get enough done in the game to make it worth playing.
Anybody else finding themselves looking for more fast paced strategy games, and can anyone recommend some?
Universe at War: Earth Assault is pretty fast paced, because troop caps are usually at 60 units.
As a strategy fan, you probably know that vehicles are often more than one unit.
It's an okay game. Console and PC versions are compatable.
Also, online achievements can help boost your "stats," I believe.
I only finished SP campaign, though, so I can't elaborate on more.
I hear Civ' Rev' is realllllly fun.
EDIT: I have not played a game like X-com: UFO Defence. EVER. This game was SUPER TOUGH but doing the research and gaining the technology... HELLO CAN YOU SAY _______???
I've actually got Universe at War and quit playing it awhile back. I really liked the concept and the giant vehicles were really cool, but I never really was able to finish a skirmish game. Never tried the single player actually, I need to re-install that and see what the mod community has come up with...
X-Com is still my all-time favorite game. Ever. Even though I don't really have the time to play it anymore.
Civ Rev was kind of fun for a couple of days, but I quickly returned it after getting bored with it. Diplomacy was lacking and all the leaders you faced had the same extremely aggressive personality. Plus I never liked the civ "combat" where you had like 3 giant guys representing entire armies mock fight 3 other giant guys.
Final Fantasy tactics is also pretty awesome. No idea about the handheld spin offs. I'm not sure if Valkyrie Chronicles fall under the strategy genre or not but what the hell, I'll mention it.
I really liked King's Bounty too, but if you were 'meh' to HoMM you'll probably get the same vibe here.
Fast paced in what regards? I see alot of recommendations of really slow paced TBS games...
In any event, check out Fallout: Tactics. Its like if X-com had twitch gameplay. Only good in multiplayer though, which rather limits how often I play it, given that there is no community anymore, and when there was, it sucked because no one played reasonable point cost games.
Company of Heroes offers more depth than the average RTS and does so at a faster pace. I'd recommend you play it if you like strategy games of any kind.
Dawn of War 2 has some bad balance issues, but it's a very fast game.
Battle for Middle Earth is kind of aged, but goes pretty fast. I don't know if BfME2 is any good.

BfME2 is one of my best 10$ purchases yet.
Pretty much what everyone else said. I bought World in Conflict after loving the multiplayer beta but I never got around to actually playing it. Man that shit was fun.
It's been a long, long time since I've played Myth, and I only played it single-player, but I distinctly recall it being one of the slowest real-time strategy games I've ever had the displeasure of playing. Units move at less than walking speed, and their attacks aren't much faster. If memory serves, the game comes with a fast forward function. And you have to use it. Liberally.

Just a small note here, there are literally like ten ways to up the pace of SotS. Right now I play games with 120 planets for 6 players, three starting colonies and three starting techs which alone shaves off like 20 rounds of the early game. You can also decrease the distances between planets, increase the economy and tech rates and so on.

Really? I don't remember a time acceleration at all. I mainly remember a bunch of fire, explosions, bloody melee and body parts flying all over the place. I also seem to remember most maps clocking in at aroung fifteen minutes or so.
edit: I just played the first level of Myth: TFL between these posts. Seven minutes and there is no time acceleration.
Really? I don't remember a time acceleration at all.
I took a look at some Myth videos, to make sure that my memory wasn't faulty, and there is definately a fast forward function, going from 2x to 16x speed. The videos also showed that the units move just as slowly as I remember. Oog.
Edit: Then is it something added in the fan patch? I can recall using fast forward every time I moved a unit, and this Let's Play of Myth I makes liberal use of the function (I just picked a random video from the playlist; in that video he starts to use the game's fast forward at 3:10).
Or maybe it's a replay of some sort and my memory is totally unreliable. More than likely this. Like I said, it's been ages since I played it, and the Let's Play that I watched probably shaped my memories of the game more than I realise.

I've been playing these games for years and I've never seen that function. Are you sure it isn't the vids going at a fast forward? Seriously, I've never seen or used a time acceleration in any Myth game. If you think the gameplay is slow, ok, that's fine. And I've spent some time on maps to limit casualties. Still, I stand by my original claim that most maps can be played in around fifteen minutes.
edit: I use the fan patches from Project Magma, if that's a feature of those patches then I'd love to use it. Seriously, no sarcasm at all. I run Myth II using the current Project Magma patches and I play the original Myth using The Fallen Levels mod. A fast forward feature would be a nice thing to have in certain places.
Haven't tried Dawn of War 2 yet so I don't know about that but DoW 1 and Company Of Heroes are pretty fast paced having to capture strategic points encourages you to go out and attack the enemy rather than sitting back and building up a base
Try the function keys. F1 to decrease speed, F2 to increase speed?
Wow, that's it. Awesome. If that's an original Myth feature, I think I'll go smash my head into some rocks now.
But seriously, it makes a pretty fast strategy game even faster now.
Yeah it's on the original box release of myth1. You pretty much only use it if you want to walk a huge distance as to use it in a fight is suicide or at least you won't do as well as you could... unless you slow down the battle.
Myth is really it's fastest when playing multiplayer. 6 man King of the Hill ffa can get pretty crazy.

I've played Heroes of Might and Magic V before, and I just remember wishing that I was playing Master of Magic. :P
Either way, nowadays I need something quicker. Halo Wars seems to be a good possibility...

No base building, just mans and shooting.
What he needs is a good THIRD GEN Roguelike, I suggest Gearhead, LCS, or DF, they allow you to accomplish a lot in a short time.
You fucking beat me to it.

Someone explain this game to me. It seems dull and painfully uninteresting.
I played it. I still didn't get it. You have like 3 unit types (plus the leader infantry) and that's it. It seems...unappealing.
