Man, this game better have at least 20 hours of gameplay, cause spending $35 on a DS game that is nearly as old as the DS, and only getting 8 hours of gameplay out of it was a dick move Nintendo.

Yes, because we all know that most games released for 60+ dollars anymore have at least 20 hours of gameplay.
Oh wait...no they don't.
The up side is that most are more likely to play through a side scrolling Mario game more than once than they are the other games out there. Especially with four player multi.

Yes, but most games goes down in price after a few years. Hence, Crackdown was $60, but you can now buy it for $9.99 new.
But how much does NSMB cost, after nearly 4 years after release?
$35.99!

Man I do not want a sidescrolling platformer that lasts 20+ hours.
Screw that, I want my platformers to last 80+ hours. I want it to be so hard that my fingers will bleed before I am able to time a 10 consecutive jumps in a row.
I dont want to breeze through a game in 8 hours, that shit is for kids.

I want them to be balls hard, but I also want them to be relatively short so that I can pick them up and slam through them in an afternoon.
I find myself generally unable to dedicate more than 20-30 hours to a home console game. I'd take a 40 hour platformer for my DS, sure, but not when I have to sit down and plan my day around it.
how do they always seem to make the mario games fun as fuck
Are we counting New Super Mario Bros?
Hey, NSMB allowed you to sear the flesh from Bowser's bones and follow it up with Mario saying "That's-ah so nice!" That is the very definition of "fun as fuck".

Batman AA was only 11 hours and it was well worth it. Thankfully, that game was for kids.
I'm just glad it's a four player game. It's not that often co-op multiplayer games are released that are not FPSs.

Call me a contrary bastard if you like, but I thought NSMB was... adequate. By-the-numbers. The physics didn't feel right (ground momentum was too slippery, which had a big effect on responsiveness; the jump curve was too slow), the new powerups were (with the exception of Mini-Mario) poorly conceived - one-note effects which didn't feel satisfying to use - and felt shoehorned into the game, the decision to reflect the SMB1 vibe lead to restrictive and uninspired level design. It felt more like a pastiche of Mario than a full-fledged canon entry.
It was still a very good game, and I'm still day-1ing this, but... it didn't have the magic that key Mario games did (for me, those are SMB, SMB3, SMW, Yoshi's Island, SM64, SMGalaxy).

(...) the decision to reflect the SMB1 vibe lead to restrictive and uninspired level design (...)
Not to be nitpicky, but the game was quite obviously influenced by SMB3 more so then by the first game.
Obviously, it related a lot to the SMB3 aesthetic, and had influences from the level design there. But it also took a lot from SMB1, most notably the reluctance to scroll in multiple directions and the formulaic level design. It almost felt like someone had played SMB to death, seen dozens of screenshots of SMB3, and built a game based on that. Everything was so.... linear, constrained.

No, they openly copied the gameplay and design of the original, they've said so themselves. That's why the movement is so slippery.
It doesn't feel like the movement of the original. It's about the same once you get moving, but the startup is too slow, which makes small, precision movement much harder.
I love the movement in New SMB more than any other game. It just feels right to me; I can probably do more with Mario there, thanks in part to his new moves, than any other Mario game. I hope New SMB Wii plays the same way.

NSMB is actually among my favourite of the 2D Marios, mostly due to the controls.
It's no Yoshi's Island, but I didn't see a lot of difference in quality of level design between it and SMB3.
I thought NSMB was a solid game, but it was very very tired creatively.
In fact, hearing that shoddy levelmusic from NSMB return in NSMB-Wii has made sure I'll actually wait for reviews before I buy it. Unfortunately, since Nintendo didn't add an online feature this will be a single player game for me.

I really liked NSMB. That being said it was far from perfect. They really needed a few more music tracks and several of the power ups were uninspired. Sadly I lost my copy somehow and I am constantly agonizing over whether I should repurchase it.

I'm also super dee duper crazy about all things Mario, and I actually loved NSMB...enough that I've played through to 100% at least three or four times, and about to start a fifth to get ready for NSMBWii.
I mean it's no SMB3 or SMW but it wasn't meant to be.
The only gripe I had with NSMB is while each level has a theme of its own, the "gimmick" that they introduced almost never come back again in later levels, resulting in levels that plays the gimmick's cards, but are left predictable up to the level's end and lacking in length. It's a shame, because I liked many stages, and hungered for a secret or later world that compiled everything to challenge the player.
Beside that, the experience I had was overall enjoyable, and I've had great two players fun. NSMB Wii looks like it has a better multiplayer, so I'm looking forward for it.
The only time I really enjoyed myself during NSMB was trying to see how far I could make it by constantly bouncing off enemies' heads. You can make it quite a ways on some levels!

My biggest beef with NSMB was that I found the shell to be the only fun one out of the batch of new power-ups, and it was by far the least utilized. And even when you did get it, the power-ups were too much "here's the tool you need to get past this one part" rather than the "here's some firepower to wreck shit up if you're skillful enough to not lose it" that they were in SMB1/3/W.

It's a new Mario game I can finally play with my wife to me, thankfully.

Yeah, there was stuff I'd have liked to have seen more of: more sewer levels, things like where you jump on that pump and blow that stopper with the Piranha Plant... among other things.
Which ones were you thinking of?
I also liked some of the newer themes, like the mountains and jungle. Dark Land was fun, too. I do wish they would introduce more such things, rather than falling back on Desert, Ocean, Snow/Ice, and Sky each time. How about a new Pipe Land, or Giant Land? NSMB seemed perfect for Giant Land.
I don't mind the basic grassland and Dark Land levels, though. They make good bookends for the game.
I would also like to see more levels at night. I always liked those, and even the early demos had them:

That's always fun. I also love to see how much of a level I can complete while spinning inside my shell.

World? Really? A cape was almost never too far away, and what else was there, really?
On another note, here are some things of potential interest regarding the DS game...

This. This is why I preordered.
Don't get me wrong, I am amped as fuck to have a new side scrolling Mario on the Wii. We both loved Galaxies because she liked collecting starbits while I did the platforming. She doesn't really like most 3D games but she is a SMB3 junkie.
The jury seems to be out on if they included starbits in the new Galaxies, the rumor being the cursor is used to control Yoshi's tongue. I haven't read about it in a while so I might be way off base, but I KNOW for FACT that we can both play NSMB Wii at the same time. BTW I wish they had a better title.

What?
Why would Nintendo lower the price when it's still showing in the top ten to fifteen sales on all platforms.
