Xbox360 lockups! A solution?

So hey.
I just turned on my 360 and was treated a nice loud noise, what sounded like bleeping and buzzing and the picture went all corrupt. I reset the console and tried it again, and the same thing happened on the 360 logo, but this time there were gray checkered rectangles all across the screen.
Damn. Fuck.
So yeah I'm sort of really pissed off. My 360 is out of warranty officially. But still in warranty for RROD.
Why couldn't it have been RROD?
Has anyone else experienced this problem? Is there a solution out there to this problem? Am I going to have to just bite the bullet and get this sucker repaired? Anyone in the UK have any exprience with getting their consoles repaired, cost and delivery time wise?

Sorry for the redundant thread, but I have been trying for a few hours now before the red rings popped up. And I have done a search for "Xbox360 Locks up" and the like with no results.
So I guess now my next step is to get this sucker repaired for free.
Again, peoples in the UK.... your experiences with this procedure?
