Ahhh! Silverfish! Stopping the ones I currently have & Preventing more?

Okay, so I just had a guest this evening. A curious Silver fish was crawling up my wall and what a doozy. He really was maybe about an inch and a half end to end, including antennae. I failed in slaying the fell beast and now he is scurrying away somewhere. But this is the second one I have spotted in about a week and I think I have a bit of a problem. Is there any effective way to remove these fuckers without calling an exterminator? I think I may have a bit of a problem on my hands...

Here's the deal. My house is about maybe 20 years old, if that. so it is kinda eh. I guess the best way to combat these fuckers, at least in the bedroom for starters is to seal shit up. Less cracks for them to scurry about in the night, less I have to deal with I suppose. Now here is the deal. I have hardwood floors that my dad put in place (so there are small, maybe 1/6th of an inch gaps sometimes on the edges of the hardwood where it meets the walls. That and the frames on the walls don't look too solid. I suppose I need to do some DIY work to seal those gaps up with some wood filler?

Next up, I do have an aging window that may feature some breaches from the outside world... Not sure what I can do here. And finally to top that all off, I have an air duct high on my wall. Perhaps I should unscrew it and stick something in to undust it?

As far as best I can tell, the best way to treat these fuckers is to prevent them. I hear that regular dusting of a room really helps, which I have been doing. But if you guys can toss in some real tips on this, I would greatly appreciate it.

Okay, a bit of a small update: I have been reading online about Diatomaceous Earth, which is like a real fine flour like powder made from crushed fossils of Diatoms or tiny single celled organisms in water. This shit is apparently so sharp that as it gets on the bug's skin, it cuts them the fuck up and they actually dehydrate to death.

Wow. So this is something to consider instead of spraying the whole house with Raid.

Holy shit. I don't know what advice I can give when you have demons invading your home.

Definitely take care of those gaps.

I had one or two silverfish every morning in my bathroom in my university halls without fail.

Kill them upon sight and do it fast, they are sneaky buggers. I just squooshed them in a tissue whenever I saw them and they eventually disappeared after weeks of slaughtering.

Murdering them, and getting some filler for any gaps will restore peace. Make sure to check around skirting boards and doorframes in particular.

About the hardwood floor: DO NOT fill up the cracks. A hardwood floor expands (and shrinks) with the season/humidity and those cracks are needed for that reason.

Murder them and use their bodies as part of the sealant. Just as a reminder to future bugs.

Well, not actual cracks between the boards, but there are some half inch gaps where another board should have started to go end to end, but my father decided it wasn't worth the trouble to cut a tiny piece the thickness of a dime to reach the wall. I'm sure this is large enough for these critters to skitter by with... :<

    I'm suprised my idea wasn't suggested yet;

Let loose 2 or 3 praying manti (mantises?) in your house! They'll take care of all the pests, you just have to put up with them.

I don't think 'moar bugs now!' is ever an acceptable answer.

Is it a silverfish or a house centipede? A lot of people call these buggers "silverfish", when they are not. I have these in my basement. Fast little critters, but they pretty much disintegrate when you smack them with something. Also, a word about diatomaceous earth. Be very careful not to breathe in any dust from it. That same sharpness that kills the insects is very bad for your lungs. Basically it is powdered glass, since that's what diatom's skeletons are/were made of.

Holy shit those pictures are horrifying. I have a silverfish problem and I read a few tips online about baiting them with different mixtures of poisoned food, it didn't work for me. I just kill every single one of them I see no matter how long it takes me. I rarely see them anymore, I think they gave up on my room.

But realistically, a mantis is kind of cute, while silverfish are pretty creepy looking. Think of it as a bug "upgrade".

My natural phobia of bugs (not helped my the in-line pictures of the evil little multi-legged sons-of-bitches) would lead me to say kill them in the most violent way you can possibly devise, so get out the evil drawing board.

And once the mantises are finished with the silverfish, they'll move on to other bugs or eachother, so it's a win-win situation.

    edit: it's "mantises"

Do you have pets? you could mix some sugar and borax together and just go to town on your floor. Let it fill up the cracks and everything.

    GAAAAH

That is the most horrifying thing I have ever seen and now I hate you.

Silverfish are nasty, but pretty easy to make 'em go away via judicious application of squooshing.

Real silverfish, I mean, not those Lovecraftian horrors that terrorize poor Funkula.

I had one of those centipedes on my wall this morning. After it fell off the wall (and I leaped away from my computer table in terror) I dropped a phone book on it, then flushed it down the toilet. Problem solved.

You should also have flushed the phone book down the toilet, then set the toilet on fire. Just to be safe.

Found some of these fuckers out back behind my apartment on a fence. I smashed them the fuck up. I don't care that they're not technically inside, but better safe than sorry.

Trust me, I wish I could nuke the place from orbit. I had to kill a really big spider (with the phone book) in almost the same place the centipede was (the 10th spider I've killed in 3 weeks of living here). I hate this place.

*edit - it's a basement apartment, so that's probably why there are so many intruders. Raaaaaaaaage.

More seriously, I've had to kill a few of these little buggers, though I think the spiders in my apartment have done a decent job of keeping them at bay so far... thankfully it doesn't seem to have been getting any worse

(The one crappy thing about living in a converted old-ish house as opposed to a new apartment complex, it's like a haven for spiders)

Check around outside of the house and find any pools of water that might collect. Is an eavestrough malfunctioning? Is an outdoor faucet leaking? Is there a sunken area of grass where rain collects along the house?

Silverfish enjoy wet, moist areas. They are actually living outside and coming inside to look for food. Eliminate the wet spots outside near the house and they won't be living nearby any more.
