TiVo Service Cancelation

I recently built a Windows 7 HTPC. Wonderful thing really, WMC works perfectly and I dropped my Comcast cable bill to the $9.57 plan for local channels, saving me $90 a month. My next move was to cancel my TiVo HD service. I picked up a TiVo HD in Sep 2007 when they first came out and really loved the device, but the HTPC does everything it does and more, so I planned to cancel my service sell the TiVo on Craiglist.

This is where it goes pear shaped. Apparently I signed up for a three year monthly commitment plan in Sep 2007, for $12.95 a month. I don't remember that part, but I take it as it is. Looking at their web site, their current plan is 1 year of service at $12.95 a month. The same I pay for a three year agreement. I paid $299 for the TiVo HD and did not recieve any rebates or promotional prices. With over a year left on my contract, I would owe $207.20 Early Termination Fee to cancel today.

I have no seemingly no way of migrating this contract to the current pricing plan. Where 1 year of service would cost exactly what I pay now for 3 years of service. They suggested that if I sell the box, I could transfer service to the new owner. But if I sell it on Craigslist, how do I prevent the new owner from leeching off my automatically deducted $12.95 a month?

Any advice for what to do with a redundant TiVo?

If you signed up for three years, they're going to hold you to it for three years. Services change their pricing all the time. Regardless of the fact that their one year plan is the same as your three year plan, that's what you signed up for.

As far as I can tell, at least. I have no idea how to transfer service to another person. I would assume it would require them signing something to transfer it in their name.
