yes and yes.
Oh yeah? Did you meet a griffin? Did you snare it with a tuna fish sandwich?
yes
i've met a griffin, and it told me I was right
Chuck Noblet: Can anyone tell me the tragic irony of the Trojan War? Tina?
Tina: Um, that horses are friendly creatures yet a hollow, wooden one was used to destroy Troy?
Chuck Noblet: Wrong and no. Anyone else? Chip?
Chip Beavers: That the mighty warrior Achilles was killed by a small cut to his ankle.
Chuck Noblet: Chip is wronger. OK, here it is. The tragic irony of the Trojan War is that though it was fought over Helen, who was young and beautiful, by the time they rescued her ten years later, she was old and ugly.
Tina: But wasn't recovering the king's wife reward enough for the Greeks?
Chuck Noblet: Tina, an ugly woman is never a reward.
guy 1: This is a griffin. Look at my pictures and historical evidence
guy 2: nuh uh, griffin can be anything as long as it is similiar. Just look at my pictures and historical evidence
guy 1: but the head and body is what defines it
guy 2: no, not really
guy 1: it totally is

That wasn't my point, and I explicitly said so several times.
I like the movie Troy where it takes the Greeks a few days to amass their entire army, get them equipped, on ships and over to Troy. Like it was a pleasure cruise or a fun day at sea.

and i don't own a PS3 so.. meh`
sorry i just had to :^: this
also yeah i thought the same of Troy. like it was a bloody 3 hour tour. (A THREE HOUR TOOOOUR)
you claimed it was modernist retconning, and that it had different definitions and that artists had the right to take liberties with it.
you were always only half right in my opinion
It was never a "retcon" in any sense, since it existed as early as egyptian lore, where it maybe even was defined. And yes it had different definitions, but they were all similiar and all featured two very important points: Avian head and Feline body. Someone decided to give that image the name "griffin" (probably around medieval times, but perhaps as early as ancient greek), and it has since been portrayed as such.
That is my only argument. A griffon is what it is
I do not consider a dog with wings a griffon, but if your argument is "well an artist can depict it any way he wants!" then how can I even argue with that
If I weren't drunk, I'd be way too exhausted to keep doing this.
It's a retcon, because the important components of mythological figures are not the specificity of superficial characteristics, but their sociological and psychological functions. Superficial definitions are a lazy, modern simplification of ideas we don't have any sort of real tangible connection to. I didn't offer different definitions. I argued against the idea of a prescriptive definition, based on other evidence that there was some variability to the shared cultural concept of a fictive creature. All of this was done to suggest that worrying about whether the comic calling it a "gryphon" was inappropriate for an animal with a mammalian head was linguistically pedantic and pretty much worthless. The comic is perfectly readable and understandable.
Thank you. I was hoping someone would get the Dallas joke.

The tangible connection is the artwork. Hundreds of images and sculptures. They were given a name. They were given parameters. That's it. We don't need a deep profound understanding of what each mythological creature is, as the definition only describes physical appearance.
yes this argument is ridiculous
no, that's silly

I have somehow missed seeing it for all these years
I can't really comment on anything else, because you keep re-editing all of your posts and changing your points. Of course, I wouldn't just edit them.
Anyway, you're still missing the point, so I have to assume it is that I am not being clear about the fundamental function of language, and not that you're just insistent on being right.
The real trick is to have plot related deaths where your choices affect who dies - like in the Witcher.
did the weather start getting rough
Was the tiny ship tossed

And sorry Javen. My reaction was similar to Defender's when my young mind realized what was going on during that fight.
