alright, so, I have a laptop with windows XP home on it that would not boot into windows, giving an error of
Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
right. So. I am trying to repair it from the recovery console, since no other way seems to work.
I have been following this microsoft support article.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545
after getting to this part
copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config\system
it returns that this file does not exist. All the other files in the repair folder are there. Is there some other way I can get this file?
I heard it suggested that you can go into system32\config and possibly rename system.alt to system, though I am reluctant to try that since it seems unclear on whether or not that will work.
I DON'T want to reformat.
TL;DR: Registry corrupted, can't copy file system out of \repair folder and into system32\config because it is missing. Help?

It also might be a file system issue. Might want to boot to recovery console and do a chkdsk /r.
but they're listening to every word I say
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{???}\RP###\snapshot\_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SYSTEM
The last RP### folder will hold your most recent snapshot.
HP can go die. What a turd. (no, I didn't buy an HP, it's my mums)
but they're listening to every word I say
C:\windows
\miniNT
F:\windows
First, WTF. Second, could I get it off of those? Maybe, just copy it straight off?

The and F: Windows directories are part of your Windows Recovery partition. Do not touch these...
C: is where you want to be working..
However, in my experience the error that you're encountering is often triggered by a failing hard drive, run a hard drive diagnostic (If this is an HP they typically have a utiltiy partition you can access by hitting F10 or F11 on boot up during the HP logo... Alternatively you can grab something like UltimateBootCD for Windows and run Western Digital Lifeguard on it... I'm willing to bet a failing hard drive...
Otherwise, as mentioned already, C:\System Volume Information\_restore{???}\RP###\snapshot\_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SYSTEM this is where you want to be looking while in the ommand prompt... (Better insutrctions are located in Part Two of the link you've already posted...
Alternatively you can get the UBCD4Win which has a Registry Restore Wizard built into it already...
Still, ym money is on a bad hard drive..

Just to be sure, I am dealing with the same issues on my desktop. I have determined my Seagate has bad sectors and I am currently migrating all my data to trash the hard drive and install Win 7.
This happens after I get it to boot to windows, it seems like it is going to and then it gives this error.
How fucked am I?
edit: my internet searches don't provide any solutions....

Just need to copy a few things, don't care about fixing the windows installation, I can just reformat after that.

You're looking for Knoppix, though I recommend the UBCD4Win as it is Windows based....
