Selling my Magic cards?

Food?Food? Registered User regular
edited December 2006 in Help / Advice Forum
I have about 200-300 of the sitting around, and I haven't played since 5th grade. I know I can take them into a game shop and sell them, but I feel like there's another way to sell them and make a lot more money. Anybody have experience with this?

Post a list of your cards. Either they're worth something, or you're the lucky owner of 300 50 cent coasters.

Haha making a list is going to suck.

    Even if it's 300 50 cent cards though, that's still $150.

It might suck but I reckon it would be worth your time.

Chance are very good that most wouldn't be worth 50 cents. I'd guess that a large portion are basic land, which are worth, more or less, jack shit unless you can find someone who is just starting out and needs a basic supply. Alot of game stores just give the basic lands away.

In my experiences with Magic, shops will always attempt to rip you off, especially if you don't know the value of your stuff. I suggest grabbing a Scrye or checking out an online store or two to get a feel of what's valuable in your collection and what's not, then either Ebay your cards, or sell them to people. Chances are you won't get the full value of your collection when converting it to cash, but it'll be alot more than if you decided to take whatever a store offers.

Yeah you'd be lucky if a store gave you half the list price. Since you probably have alot of common(i.e worthless) cards the best bang for your buck might be to find someone who's just starting out and wants some older cards. Then tally up your valuable cards and sell em all as one bunch.

Isn't eBay good for this? I remember seeing people sell cards on there all the time.

On a related note, I have full sets of both Weatherlight and Tempest. Are these worth anything?

Odds are fairly good that unless you have 300 Alpha or Beta cards your set isn't worth very much. You can look up the value on your cards at www.findmagiccards.com and see what they are going for.

Most comic shops already have enough $.50 commons and uncommons so they aren't going to buy yours. If you have some older Type One stuff you can obviously get money but it's not going to be much.

Do you know what sets the cards are from? That can help establish a general price.

I'd only suggest Ebay if you have a few money cards in your collection. Otherwise you aren't going to get much.

Back in "the day" a box of 1,000 cards which promised 10 random rares went for about $15.

If you list some cards and the sets they are from a value can be established easily.

Not really. Weatherlight sucked and tempest didn't have many $ cards.

If you happen upon a copy of Scrye you can look up prices for complete sets.

Kind of depends on when you were in 5th grade. Rare cards from early on can be worth hundreds.

5th grade was 8 years ago.

I have mostly Urza's Destiny, with some Tempest, I think? I don't really know, it's all extremely spread out, I can't even remember how I got them all. I know for a fact that there's several cards worth $8+, and those are just ones I specifically remember and picked out.

Do you have any Masticores or Metal Workers?

    www.mtgfanatic.com

This is where I have bought and sold all my cards. At this point I have only one deck left which is a green one I made long, long ago. I still use it though at my friends house when we occasionally play magic. But that website rocks regardless.

I'd definitely go with ebay. That way you can charge full or near full value for your cards. Shops have to give you so little because many of the cards never sell.

I have a full Invasion set, and a shit ton of stuff ranging from Fallen Empires to the set after Invasion. I need to get around going through and selling my collection. I think I still have a few dual lands, my collection of Wheel of Fortun and Forks (about 9 each) and then a random assortment of crap that I never got around to selling trading before I got out of it.

    I miss sealed decks tourneys.

I sold 4 Morphlings on eBay, which is basically the ZOMG card in the Urza Block, and I got a total of 89 dollars for the 4 of them. Not too shabby. Easy to ship, too. I would try grouping the cards by color or by rarity. Like throwing a few extra semi-decent cards in with a rare one. It usually boosts the value above the norm, and still be able to get rid of the shitty ones for SOMETHING.

Yeah, I was thinking about that. Would it even be a bad idea to sell groups as large as 20-30 cards? They'd be kind of like mini decks. I'm not sure whether to do that or if I should try to sell the rare ones individually and group the mediocre ones with the real common ones.

Also, what's the status of the Uncut cards (you know, silver border, the joke cards)? Should I sell the ones I have together, throw them in with some other cards, or what?

Chances are even if you have 300 cards (your high end estimate) your entire collection is worth less than $50. That's assuming they're in perfect condition and you got lucky and ended up with at least one rare worth $15-$20. With a small number of cards like that one thing that would help is to know how many basic land cards you have out of that. Keep in mind basic land is almost completely worthless as far as price goes.

In your case I'd say hang on to them unless you really need the money or really want to get rid of them. The money you'll get probably won't be worth the hassle of selling them.

    *Edit*
So according to the site _J_posted my Promotional series Serra Angel is worth $830. This does not seem right to me. I mean that's like $200 more than an Unlimited series Black Lotus.

    Fuck man, I'd buy both

    if the price was right

I'd keep tempest for myself, and give weatherlight as a gift to an old friend

PM me with a price on that shit

EDIT: seeing as Tempest sells for pushin 200 dollars, maybe not

However, weatherlight seems to sell for between 50 and 70 bucks depending on condition, so yee, i suppose I would be down

    (after some brief ebay browsing)

Anyone know of any good card sites for other types of cards? I have a fair amount of baseball cards and a bunch of comic book cards.
