Ok, so my friend and I have been playing Rise of Nations on and off for a few years. We picked it up later on because we needed RTS that would be able to run on his computer.
Right now though, he's gonna be upgrading to a newer computer soon so I'm looking for something new to play.
RoN is cool because its basically RTS + Civilization 2. I'm looking for another game that focuses on empire building that we can comp stomp on basically.
Strong Recommendation for Sins of a Solar Empire. I loved Rise of Nations as well, and I think you'll find SoaSE philosophically similar -- there's a heavy strategic component focusing on logistical developments and systems research combined with tactical combat. The maps can be ginormous (multiple star systems) and the comp-stomping is delightful. The UI is also a lot more helpful than it was in Rise of Nations -- via the empire tree, you can simultaneous manage multiple engagements without ever actually zooming in to watch the combat (you mainly just zoom in to watch because it's fun).

Wow, I never that of Sins like RoN before, but SammyF is right. They are philosophically alike.
Alternatively you can try Empire Earth 3. I have yet to play it, but if I recall it's supposed to be pretty much the same thing as RoN.

A Capellan's favorite sheath for any blade is your back.
It's like Rise of Nations with steampunk dudes, magical arabian dudes, and overzealous technological dudes.
It was lots of fun!
It also tanked! Taking the whole Rise of Nations IP with it.
As sad as your facts are.. it was still a fun game!
I didn't like it. It was a competent RTS, but lacked the characteristics which made Rise of Nations so unique. It was just an RTS, which I could play in lots of different games. I go to Rise of Nations for Rise of Nations.
On topic, Sins is spectacular but in terms of atmosphere and setting I can't think of anything that comes close to RoN.
You peckerheads are gonna force me to go downstairs into my box of old games and bust out RoN
Dude ... America vs Soviet Union. DO IT!
Yeah, the expansion pack's Conquer the World scenario things... they were awesome. Be Napoleon, or Alexander the Great, or either side of the Cold War. I loved that game.
I got Dawn of War 2 recently, but it's not what you would call historical. And there's always Age of Empires 2, which was like the pinnacle of RTS action. But that's even older than RoN.
If you were looking for cooperative comp-stomping strategery, the Total War series is not going to be for you I'm afraid.
Aren't they adding a Co-op campaign for Empire: Total War?
Nah, not gonna work for you I'm afraid. Not yet at least. Last time I ragequit all it still had for multiplayer was online skirmishes against other people, as in the real time battles. It's pretty lackluster, isn't implemented well, but may have a 2 players versus computer option.
Last I checked, they still hadn't added in Coop campaigns, which didn't end up making it in the launch. It's supposed to be in an eventual patch, which currently doesn't have a date attached because they're still patching all the bugs.
Whats cool about RoN is that the graphics still hold up really well, I just wanted to mix it up a little bit after playing for so long.
I've played Empire Earth 2, that was our game before RoN.
How's Civilization now-a-days? I'd be willing to give that a try with comp stomp if the computer doesn't blatantly cheap like it's done since 2 and got retardedly bad about in Civ3.

Civ IV is actually pretty sweet for a Comp Stomp, especially if you designate set teams. You share research point pools across civs within a team, which balances the game out tremendously -- in one of the earlier games my brother and I would tag team advancement discoveries and then swap them out, meaning we advanced about twice as fast as the other teams, which made the game stupidly simply.
The only problem I have with Civ for coop (and multiplayer in general) is that it's turn-based. If you're willing to do a PBEM over the course of a few months, that's wonderful. If you're sitting next to one another or across a table from one another on your laptops, only one person is actually making any gameplay decisions at any one time--the rest of you are waiting for him to make up his mind.
You know what's kind of like Civ and Empire: Total War, though, and does have fully functional multiplayer campaigns, and does combine grand strategy with tactical battles? Crown of Glory. It's a Napoleonic-era wargame, multiplayer (up to eight players, I think). Turn based in both the grand campaign and the tactical battles, which are hex-map affairs. Unlike Civ, turns in the grand strategy map are take simultaneously.
Not the prettiest game, and it's difficult to learn, but check it out anyway, it might fit the bill. There are plenty of similar hex-map wargames you could both probably play together, as well.
How about Europa Universalis or Hearts of Iron? They don't have the same RTS feel because it's grand strategy, but they blend the empire building of Civ with some real-time elements.
I didn't much like either one, but they do have devoted fans.
I'm going to throw out Supreme Commander:FA. You can team up and play against AI or others online and quite a lot of replayability due to many maps, options that can be set, etc.

What was that totally badass mod for SupCom? The one that has all those videos showing it off?

Yes, the campaigns were awesome. Alexander the Great and Cold War were the best.
Oh god, now I'm going to install this again.

Like you, I enjoyed RoN's mix of RTS and Civ. SK2 does this as well, with a truely excellent espionage system.
I highly recommend you give it a shot.

Tested this game. Made me want to shoot myself.
Sins? Or Rise of Legends?
