Clean carpet, clean air

So, as my wife and I prepare to move out of our current apartment I remember a relative of ours telling us of a device they purchased which was similar to a bug bomb, only it was to make a place smell better, was like a bubblegum scent or something... Anyways, when we move out of our apartment I want to clean the carpets and scent bomb the place to leave it with a better smell than we came into...

Smelled like mothballs when we moved in, and it stayed that way, and one of my cats had an accident in a couple places, and I'm looking for a cleaning agent that'll work quite well in cleaning it up.

In terms of cleaning supplies I already have, there's the SpotBot, a Bissell Heat carpet cleaner, and a Dyson DC07 Animal vacuum... I just want to know what works best for removing "bad cat" spots...

I want to say an old-timey remedy was just vinegar and water. That might only be for new stains though.

It is extremely difficult to get cat urine out of carpets. If they are older stains, it is even more difficult. It will have settled down into the carpet pad underneath.
