How to deal with a water stain

Anyone have any experience in dealing with water stains on a wall? There was a plant watering mishap at the house I'm staying in over the summer, and as a result we have this:

Is my only option to paint over it, or is there another way to get rid of it?

On a related note, does anyone know a good way to get small mold stains off of paint? My roommate never vents the bathroom when she showers so there's mold spots on the ceiling. Can they be scrubbed off?

You are going to need to paint. Scout their garage out to see if they have any cans. Most people keep touch up cans around.
Be careful since it might obviously look like a painted stripe by the time you are through. You might be best off letting the home owners know. Accidents happen afterall.

depends on the color , but if white you can use bleach to kill anything. we used to just spray clorox cleanup and let it sit

It's a light yellow. I'll spray some Lysol Mildew remover and let it sit for a bit.

worst comes to worse just dilute some bleach and test it on a non conspicuous spot , it should be fine but test

For ceiling mold spots spray it with some bleach, let it sit til the mold disappears then paint over with Kilz.
