Laptops touchpad stopped working. Ideas?

Wasn't sure whether to toss this in Technology Tavern or here. Things seem to get faster answers here, so here goes...
I got home from work and turned on my laptop (Sony Vaio VGN-NR180E) and the mouse touchpad isn't registering anything. Thoughts? I reinstalled Windows Vista but no luck.
Usually there is a function key to disable/enable the touchpad, try hold the FN key (usually near the lower left of the keyboard) and hitting F6 or F7 (its one of those for my laptop, try them all just to be sure).

No dice. This is making me consider buying a Netbook though. Over to that thread!

If you reinstalled Vista I'd guess it's a driver issue.

I don't think so. It doesn't even work during the Vista install. It should just "work". I'm currently installing all the updates. We'll see what happens.
umm this might be a long shot but i recently fixed an issue for a friend who had a similar problem. With hers, both the keyboard and touchpad werent working at all. Yet they worked in safe mode.
Reinstalled vista, different drivers no luck.
In the end realized it was the actual battery causing the problem. Something along the lines of battery was kinda dead but when connected drawing power away from the keyboard and touchpad (which is why it worked in safe mode- less power consumption) At least thats what i think anyways.
To fix, i took the battery out, disconnectd from mains, held the power button down for 1 minute to discharge. Then left the battery out and connected the AC adaptor.
everything worked after that, but she cant use that battery anymore.
