Wii resolution issues

I'm having a problem playing Majora's Mask on my Wii. I have a somewhat older Sony Wega HDTV. I've never had any problems with it until this specific game (which is the first N64 game I downloaded).

During certain scenes (and I think they're all cutscenes), my TV cannot display what the game is showing. One specific time is when I play the song that starts the 3-day process over again (which you play to save). When I play that song and the short cutscene starts, my display is all garbled. This also happens during other events in the game, but it's always the same few things. At first I thought may the Wii was going bad, but then I found this on Nintendo's support page:

If you are experiencing display issues (dim, blank or half-blank screen, ghosted image, etc.) with a Virtual Console game while using the Component Video Cable, please read the following:

Some Virtual Console games default to displaying 240 lines of video. Some HDTVs are unable to display a signal with only 240 lines. Try the steps below to set the Wii to output 480 lines of video, which may solve the problem:

1. While on the Wii Channel Menu (main screen of the Wii), connect a Nunchuk to Wii Remote.
2. Select the Virtual Console game from the Wii menu, then select "Start" to begin the game.
3. When the game starts, press the Home button on the Wii Remote. (In many games, the music can be heard when the game starts.)
4. Select "Operations Manual" from the Home menu.
5. Press the Z + A + 2 Button simultaneously (the Z Button is on the Nunchuk). A sound will be heard if the button combination has been entered correctly.
6. Close the Home menu. The game should now display correctly. Note: You will not have to do this the next time you play, as the Wii console will remember these settings.

This makes perfect sense. This must be what the problem is.

However, look at step 1. It says connect the nunchuk to the Wii Remote. If I do that and then try to play Majora's Mask, I can't get past the screen that says "You will need the classic controller." So how does Nintendo expect me to get to Step 2?

I tried connecting the classic controller, then going into the game, and THEN connecting the nunchuk, but that doesn't seem to work. I don't want to play this already old-looking game if my TV is going to mess up all the time.

Help?

Not yet, but that's a good and obvious idea.
