Best backup app for OSX?

yalborapyalborap Registered User regular
So, the thread title is simple. I'm on OSX(10.4). I need a good app for backing up to an external hard drive in a fashion that would cover all those little glitches and quirks and such. Free would be ideal.

What're my options?

Upgrade to 10.5 and use Time Machine.

I'm gonna concur with bobmyknob and recommend upgrading to 10.5, or wait a few months and upgrade to 10.6 (If you have the capable hardware)

JWZ has a pretty good backup guide using rsync: http://jwz.livejournal.com/801607.html

I'll second Carbon Copy Cloner. I've never had a problem with it and I've been using it for about 3 years, with 10.4 and 10.5 with no issues.

Also, CCC utilizes rsync, so you don't need to bother figuring it out.

    Here's where to grab it:

Yeah, it's running right now. Seems to be fantastic.

SuperDuper! is where it's at. Carbon Copy Cloner works, too, but SuperDuper apparently does a better job of preserving permissions, resource forks, and so on compared to CCC so I switched to it. I use it in combination with Time Machine and the pair works really well IMO.
