But it seems people (especially this account that more than likely was just created to make this post and will never come back) are mostly mad because their favorite game isn't mainstream or whatever. It's pretty much the equivalent of this:
Except replace "Rock Band" with Halo.

@Elimination: ...I fail to see how me saying "because the game is fun" doesn't having anything to do with a topic on why Halo may be popular. And looking at the rest of the thread(which is basically trolling anyway), I'm not being any less productive than anyone else here. But yeah, buddy, whatever spares your ego I guess.
Halo 1 was a lot of fun for me on the PC, as I really enjoyed the mechanic of you getting a real good weapon off the start (the pistol) and then being able to get better, but specialized weapons (shotgun/sniper etc.) It was a good FPS, not necessarily the best but it controlled well (grenade button was smart and every game should have it) and was available on consoles.
Well, Halo is a lot more fun to dick around in with friends than CoD though. So it has that.
Maybe for you, but not for many others. I love tactical shooters like CoD, where the person doesnt have to rush to the sniper rifle in the map befor everyone else or what have you, rush to so and so vehicle. I mean Halo is fun online to mess around, but if i want to play a REAL tactical shooter, and not in a shooty childrens playground full of bright aliens and pink armour and silly tinny weapons i play CoD.
Unfortunately, if you don't want to play "grenade wars", "grenade wars in narrow corridors" or "watch me pull a grenade the second you kill me", that throws out COD as well.
The Rainbow Six games--pretty much all of them, to varying degrees--blow COD out of the water when it comes 'REAL tactical shooter(s)', by your definition. There's no "kill me so I can automatically throw a grenade at you" option, for example.
tl;dr--no FPS is perfect.
Im not saying CoD is perfect, and i do sort of agree with you about the stupid grenade thing. But you are kind of exagerating it quite a lot, it isn't nearly even close to that bad, as most players only carry one grenade to throw. And i didn't say i hated Halo, i have had fun with it in the past, but the game is not innovative enough, it never throws anything new into the mix, and other shooters, espcially on the PC are surpassing it by miles. I'd be willing to give Halo another go if they did something other than make their graphics hi-def. I like their weird psuedo map editor thing in the 3rd one, but thats been done, and WAAAY better, on Consoles for over a decade now, that really wasn't new to me. Like i said earlier i really enjoyed Halo 1, but after that i really lost interest, the plot went downhill, and so did the lack of innovation.
I get the Halo is accessable to the more casual gamers, but at the same time its not. There are a lot of hardcore Halo players, more so than in any other console shooter probably, that will absolutely face rape everyone they come across, and are they nice about it either? No, they aren't, Halo is filled with people who like to tell people how to play their game. The community can be totally awful. Not as bad as Counter-Strike mind you, but pretty damn close. So saying the game is awesome for casual gamers, it can be, but it also isn't at the same time.
Everything you've said is mostly true but is nothing that hasn't been said before. The primary reason for Halo's success is that it was marketed very well at an audience that had relatively low expectations for what makes a good shooter. This, combined with the fact that it was practically the only good game on the first Xbox for MONTHS, making it a "must buy" game by default, led to its current day popularity and hype. Of course, with the lack of gameplay innovation since the original Halo by Bungie, I think people, even console FPS gamers, are a bit less bedazzled by the franchise these days.
I came here to ask a question with an answer in mind and you (who are me) said the answer I wanted! Hooray! Thread purpose fulfilled!
There is no one answer. Fun is very subjective.
Ugh why am I responding to this circle jerk.
Is it really a circle jerk if it's just one guy assuming multiple names though

You described COD4 as a 'REAL tactical shooter', and I brought up reasons why it's inferior to the R6 games in that regard. Which is not to say COD4 isn't a fantastic FPS--it is, provided you're willing to live with cover-poking, turtling, grenade spamming and 'automatic death grenade mode'. These are all pretty laughable, unrealistic things in any setting. It's basically a children's playground filled black armor with grenade spamming. R6 is not. And that works for COD4.

Yeah this is true, this will end up being like the "i hate WoW" and "I love WoW" arguments that spring up. Everyone is either on one side or the other, and most people dont really post anything worthwhile to spring up real gameplay discussions. It always ends up just degenerating into insult tossing.
I think the more important question is why is halo so hated, and the answer is because it's at the front of the war self described hardcore gamers have vs casual gamers.
Fyrrewulf you are like ---> <--- this with like, my brain maaaaaan. Real with it
Typical Halo fratboy jackass.
Go back to drinking excessively and having sex with hot chicks!
I know right. If only all the fratboys and console gamers would die off we'd have a utopia of PC gaming aryan ubermensch who chop skyscrapers in half with their dicks.

i'm no halo fan, but i'm pretty sure the original halo was a bit of a pot-stirrer
i mean it introduced or popularised regenerating health, effective melee attacks, a dedicated grenade button, more responsive controls for shooters on consoles, and some other stuff

I vote for you because you are from BC, like me, and have a cool sig of a game that is way cooler than all the haloz.
Considering most of its fanbase consists of frat boys and moronic college students.
I can say with 80% certainty that anybody who says something like this is a jackass
I mean, it screams "I take a shower when the dd/mm/yyyy is a prime number and hate people with muscles"
Holy shit, those guys are going to be going years without hygiene.
In all seriousness, Halo has some really great qualities:
* Incredibly polished
* Really, really satisfying melee attack
* It has the "30 seconds of gameplay" down very well in singleplayer
* Reliable and popular multiplayer
* The first good, mainstream next-gen FPS. True, tons of people loved Goldeneye, but its graphics and such just don't stand up.

Hence why i said i enjoyed Halo 1, but apparently you chose not to quote that part for some reason.

Hating a game because of the community is retarded.
That I do not agree with. It's quite easy to have a lot of fun with a game and have a few bad experiences online and get completely turned off.
I fucking hate TF2 because of the community. I've only been in two games online - one consisted of one player playing annoying music through the speaker, others spamming the chat with racial epithets, and lots of bitching. The other was full of the same things, plus a sick fuck with a picture of a young girl sucking on a grown man's dick as his spraypaint. By young girl, I mean probably around 10.
Seriously, the community can easily turn you off from a game.

Turok sucked ass
come on
They both sucked. Doom SNES is where it's at!
Does that make you angry?
So? Go play them instead of Halo, then. Nobody is forcing you to play, like, or even care about Halo.

And of course, Doom XBLA blows the shit out of that, no questions asked. 4-man splitscreen co-op/deathmatch bitches!

my favorite movie is Revenge of the Nerds because it is SO TRUE
one day I'll gather the courage to dress up in a darth vader costume and more or less rape the football star's girlfriend
not today though
I'm biding my time
Like me and almost every single MMO i have ever played besides EvE, unfortunately EvE is increadibly boring.

I was going to call you a bigot, but then I remembered my unease about the adult Pokemon community.
