Backing up a Palm Treo

I'm trying to help someone fix a problem with their Palm, and I don't have a lot of experience with these. She had a minor problem for which a tech rep for Palm suggested re-installing the Palm OS system on her laptop. Sadly, he didn't tell her to back up her contacts/calendar beforehand, so now her data no longer exists on the laptop. Her Palm still has everything on it, but when she tried to sync downward, it copied about 20% of the entries and aborted.

Here's the message it gave her:

Hotsync session aborted
HotSync session started on 07/xx/xx xx:xx:xx
Date Book synchronization aborted
Duration:
Some handheld records were not copied to the Palm OS Desktop. Attempting to restore from the handheld.
Desktop = 8302, Handheld = 17467

Edit: I guess I'm just worried because her contacts are all on the Palm and I don't know how to back it up. Two tech reps suggested DBfixit, which she downloaded, but I'm hesitant to do anything that might cause an overwrite of her device's files.

Any advice?
