Is D&D online anything like pen and paper?

SO I know this isn't the video games forum, but my question pertains mostly to tabletop:

I was playing a D&D 4E game with buddies of mine and we had a regular gaming night. That all ended when I moved though and while we tried to use maptool and what not it sort of fell apart.

I haven't Tried D&D online but is there any translation from the tabletop experience to the game? I know it's free now but i would want to play it in a group context and i don't want something like WoW etc. I want to play a group game with my friends and I'm really just asking if it would suffice.

I figure someone here plays both and might be able to help me out.

Also, any other suggestions of multiplayer "group RPG" activities even if it's something simple that we could sort of "re-create" that gaming night experience would be neat.

Thanks.

Not really. It tries, but it's not really the same. If you want a group game that is more like D&D I'd suggest the Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dales or Neverwinter Nights games.

From what I understand, DDO is pretty wow-like. Like basically every MMO.

Sounds like you might be more interested in NWN or something, have someone make a module and DM it while other people connect to his server, all that good stuff.

Yeah, I played the trial a while ago, and DDO felt to me like it was just WoW re-skinned with warforged. I'll second Tomanta with the suggestion of Neverwinter nights, the online multiplayer campaign stuff is supposed to be pretty cool, I had some friends that were really into it.

Maptools with voicechat might be worth giving another chance. It's going to be the closest thing to being around a table with a functioning DM.

OK thanks for the input. Perhaps we'll try NwN. Maptools was rough and crashed a lot and the networking was horrible. But it was indeed the closest to tabletop.
