edit- Actually I have in in the mood for a fantasy tactics sytled game for the PC. Like Final Fantasy tactics or Battle for Wesnoth.
I don't want to derail the thread so I won't say much here, but look at Age of Wonders 2: Shadow Magic. Fantasy tactics itch is fucking cured right there.
As for the OP, everything that's been suggested (that I've played) is excellent. Can't go wrong with this stuff. Now to check out this Spiderweb stuff...
AOW:SM is THE best fantasy strategy game. Its kinda like Master of Orion 2 in its category. Everything you ever wanted and more. And fully customizable of course? Random maps? Sure. Strong AI? Sure. Even PBM support if you need it. And even if a bit dated the grapics are just gorgeous.
so far I'm looking at planescape, arcamum and the spiderweb ones.
btw fallout 3 is what got me into this and strangely enough morrowind was my first pc game, although I was a bit to young to grasp what I was supposed to do and just went around killing people.
Diablo 2 is fun and all, but it diverges pretty wildly from everything else in this thread. Basically no story, no character development and limited strategy. Just click and loot. Addictive, but definitely a different vein than the rest of stuff mentioned.
And that's diferent from the Bethesda suggestions...how? :P

And the Exile 1 demo is the normal game, except with an impassable pit spanning the middle of the game world. Everything you can do solely in the first half of the normal game, you can do in the demo.
I motherfucking ended the Exile 1 demo when I was 12 'twas the first-gen graphics and I had to run RAMdoubler (mom's mac only had 1mg ram) to even start that shit up.
Would like to replay it now that I think of it, all three of them are excellent and accessible rougelike-y games.

I've heard you can OD if you take more than 1mg of RAM. :winky: You better be careful.

Ah, old times. I discovered Exile 1 by downloading the demo off of AOL. Yeah.
Stuff which may not be immediately obvious about the Spiderweb Software games:
- The Exile games have been remade as Avernum.
- Blade of Exile has been released as open source. Grab it here.
Edit: Woah. The Geneforge series has ended, and now they're making the final Avernum game. It'll be interesting to see what new universe they create after this.
Another vote for Eschalon Book 1, I was really suprised at how slick it all felt on my macbook, its the perfect laptop game and the sequel coming out this year looks even better.
Basically its like a more in depth Battle for Wesnoth, top down turn based strategy game. Terrain and elevation affect the outcome of combat as does shit like if the unit is guarding, do they have the charge advantage, whats the units morale status and crap like that.
The combat has an impressive level of depth to it, if a unit of troops is attacked, the ranged and skirmish units in the surrounding hexes will support it with projectile attacks if they haven't been attacked that turn and there's a whole slew of modifiers built into the engine that lets you pull off some pretty tricky shit with your army.
Take the goblin skirmishers for example, on their own their a pretty weak unit, but they don't suffer a movement penalty when they're in forests and if they stay stationary in a forest tile for a turn then they go into stealth mode and can't be need by anything other than a special detector unit (normally a flier). While they're stealthed anything that moves past their square takes an ambush attack which are bloody lethal and do serious damage to even the hardest troops.
My favourite strategy was to stick a unit of skirmishers in hiding on either side of a forest path and then use the goblin wolf raiders fire and retreat ability to harass a hardcore cavalry unit into pursuing my wolves down the forest path, so that they then suffer from two ambushes both of which are supported by the wolf raiders, which is basically a death sentence.
Yeah, so everybody needs to go buy it cause it's awesome and nobody ever played it
Haven't played Vampire, but I'll heartily recommend The Witcher too. I'm playing it right now and it's fantastic.

Man, I just watched some V:TM:B videos....looks like a really good game (bugs notwithstanding). I've also had the RPG "itch" lately, but I can't bring myself to attempt liking Fallout 3 for a third time.
I tried to get into the Witcher, but the combat system really turned me off. Felt like I was just playing rock-paper-scissors over and over. But maybe the non-demo combat is significantly better.
Also, I couldn't see this yesterday because I was at work but Wizardry 8 is also an amazing game and should be aquired by the OP (or anyone who enjoys WRPGs).
Wizardry 8 has a good demo, let's you run through the first dungeon and gives you an excellent feel for the game.
It's another Very Good Game™.

Because no one mentioned it yet, and because I have a soft spot for them, I recommend the Gothic games to you (especially 2 + addon). In that game, you 'control' (some people appearently don't like tank controls) a nameless guy from the over-the-shoulder perspective who is set lose on the island of Korinis to slay all sorts of fantasy monsters and loot treasures (there's a story, too). If you feel particulary daring and are resitent to frequent system crashes, you might even want to try the third game in the series (I heard they fixed most problems with the addon though).
And since we're talking about WRPG already, I want to point your attention to game that I just came to know about yesterday called Divinity 2 - Ego Draconis. From all the infos I gathered and the pics I have seen, it's fairly reminiscent of the Gothic games, hence why I'm quite excited for this, and you can shapechange into a dragon, too! Best thing though is that the game is already coming out in two days here, English version seems to be close to release as well, and it's for PC and 360. I might even be inclined to start a thread about it when I grab my copy.
Other games you'll want to look forward to are Risen (by the devs who did Gothic 1-3 before leaving the publisher who owns the rights for the series) which is pretty much Gothic without the name (and it looks mighty good), and Gothic 4 - Arcania (by the guys who did the Gothic 3 addon), which could be a really nice rpg as well. Also, both games are aimed to break into the US market, so you can even expect some non-horrendous voice-over efforts this time!

So I bought this and have played a number of scenarios. I love it! The game does have everything! I can't tell you how many times I was playing the game thinking to myself, "I hope the game has _____" or "I really wish the game did _____" only to actually find it it does/did! Spooky.
While I only played a few matches I am liking the inventive ways to use magic. I had an enemy city across a lake. Instead of build ships or sending my armies all around the large lake. I just used my magic to freeze the water so my hordes could cross.
I am playing with the unofficial 1.4 patch since it seems to be the standard.

This is probably toward the very edge of WRPGs, but since Wesnoth has been mentioned I am obligated to note that King's Bounty: The Legend is pretty good. At least, the demo was. You can get a good three hours or so of playtime out of that sucker.

I'm playing that right now. Was gonna bring it up, but wasn't sure it counted.
Was then going to pimp my company, but it appears to have beeb mentioned enough that I can avoid that.
Did people mention Arcanum already? I didn't see it on my Planescape/VTM/Arcanum pass for "cool things that could get missed."

That sounds amazing. Where did you buy it? It's not on steam, gamersgate, or gog. The order link on the official website links to 3 stores which no longer stock it. And it's available on Amazon for $308 (ok, someone's selling it for $89, but that's still not very good).
Reading your post, it sounds like you got it recently. Am I missing something?
I can't believe none of you muckers have brought up Daggerfall yet. Works fine in Dosbox, and is about as fucking west as you can go without falling into the ocean. Old, and the random dungeon generation can bite you in the ass sometimes, but good lord it is hard to find a finer game than that.
EDIT: I know you asked for western PC stuff, but if you happen to have a PS2 I'd also reccomend picking up King's Field: The Ancient City. It is by a japanese company, but trust me in that it's got no JRPG bullshit whatsoever and is about the westest RPG by a japanese company out there. Think of a toned-down Oblivion with the kind of hardcore brutality you see in Roguelikes, oozing with atmosphere.

I had no idea the game was so rare. I got lucky and a local Mom & Pop game store had a jewel case copy. However, Gametap does have it available.

3. Mines of Titan (AKA Mars Saga)

I'm pretty sure this should be Sentinel Worlds I: Future Magic. But yeah, it was good fun back in the day.
Holy shit, I didn't know this. Downloading right now, I loved the BoE demo back in the day and always wanted to play it.

Soulbringer was awesome, but I'm not sure how well it has aged. Now I kinda want to see if I still have the cd somewhere.

This. I couldn't get DOSbox to work for shit, then I downloaded a graphic interface for it and its easy now.
And yeah, Planescape and Arcanum were released in like 1999-2000. They are not dos games.
