Right, I guess in that case it's not so much faux-beef as a better substitute.

I ain't gonna give up me beef and steak. The will have to pry my cows from my cold dead hands or something like that.

In other news people create a lot of CO2 when they die and get their body cremated/buried, so stop dying people!

Here's one example of a vegan bodybuilder.

    Here's a list.

I also lived with a vegan pro-cyclist, and his diet didn't affect his physical abilities in any negative way.

One of these guys eats his meat, the other doesn't.

The one that doesn't look absolutely disgusting must be the one who doesn't eat meat.

Even if the difference in muscle mass between them was solely the result of a difference in meat consumption (and it absolutely isn't), the potential to develop as much muscle mass as the latter fellow is hardly relevant to anyone with no personal interest in bodybuilding, much less developing their body to such freakish proportions.

We've already been over this: power lifting is a hobby. Why do we feel impelled to maximize anyone's ability to lift the heaviest shit? Or to get their muscles that much more bulge-y? Is this something we are going to design social policy around? Is this something which is a serious moral consideration?

So, why are we talking about it again?

I was just useing it as an example to show that whilst there may be vegan "bodyduilders", the guys who are out there winning Mr Olympia are not them.

I was surprised to see Bill Pearl on the list of vegetarian athletes as a Mr Universe title holder, only to read that he didn't give up meat until he was 39 and even then still eats eggs and milk, so that list is a little more than suspect.

He's vegan. Apparently it does take a lot of managing what you eat to still be able to maintain weight as a vegan, but it's definitely doable.

I fully agree with the premise of eliminating cows as a staple food, as they are not particularly energy efficient as a meat product.

We should provide multiple roles for our meat animals so that we fully utilize their potential. Give them jobs, generate our electricity for us by turning large hamster wheels and farting into methane collectors, and then bring them home to be our pets where we can teach them tricks and fetch us beers from the fridge. Once they're fully matured we can then send them to the slaughter house and enjoy a nice doggie steak or stir fried cat when they return from the butchers neat and packaged.

Animal shelters would finally be for-profit organizations! Breeds would be chosen for their taste and fat content rather than how strange we can make them look.

Hi. I'm a vegetarian, and I work out at the gym and (money permitting) train muay thai.

Wow, good job bro, so when will I be seeing you in the UFC as the first successful vegetarian fighter?

You don't actually watch UFC do you? Mac Danzig, TUF season 6 winner is a vegan. Personally I think he fights guys with too little experience but he does have a good record and is a successful UFC fighter.

I think for most of us giving up meat entirely wouldn't exactly be the best solution but cutting down our intake of it would definatly help with the environment and our health.

Honestly for me, eating less meat was just a natural consequence of eating healthier. Once portions went down and I was eating more plant stuff to get all the appropriate nutrients there was just less room in my diet for animal corpses. I still probably eat too much, but I like to think I'm ahead of the American curve on it.

He has lost his past 3 fights, is a light weight so doesn't exactly need to pack on much at 5'8 155lbs and he is one fighter out of how many?

Now compare him to Brock Lesnar in size and strength terms, do you think he could be any where near that big if he was a vegan form the age of 16?

Pretty much. One of the biggest things being missed in this thread is that industrialised Ag in the US is quite different to just about anywhere else due both to cultural factors and the effect of their farm subsidies. The meat products produced in the US by those methods are unhealthy, crap quality, and rely on both treating animals very poorly and utterly destroying the environment surrounding the production facilities. THe knock-on effects include a number of direct threats to human health en masse, including dietary problems, environmental quality problems, and the generation of new and interesting diseases.
