Basically I'm looking for a good web browsing(with wifi)/media phone that costs round about the £240 mark. So far my searching has turned up very little but I feel I should at least get a firm idea of what's on offer before I decide to throw a huge amount of money on a iphone 3g. So any personal recommendations for cheap alternatives or do no other phones stand-up to the iphone at the moment?
General consensus is that the iPhone's Safari is the best mobile browser out there right now. If you use and like iTunes already, you've got that there too.
Is the Palm Pre available there yet? People like it, but others say that it's got a bad case of the 1.0-itis.
Hmm, is the iPhone that expensive across the pond? If you sign on a 2 year contract the original iPhone is now like 99 and the 3gs I think is 199... but I use a G1 and I love it, so you know... there's that path.
You can certainly get it for under £100 on a reasonable monthly rate (well, reasonable by iPhone standards anyway). The 3G is even cheaper. Almost all the rate options are free for the 3G handset.

Plus Apple just bitch-slapped Palm by blocking the Pre from faking itself as an iPhone to iTunes.
Agreed. I just picked up a g1 recently. The OS is nice, has lots of slick stuff like the iPhone, tons of apps, etc. If you can wait a couple months, HTC is releasing the g2 and something else with Android. Sony also has an Android phone coming out.
I picked up a Nokia E63 from Amazon for $200 US. It's pretty good, and the default browser is nice. You can also download other browsers on to it, I prefer Opera mobile. If you want an unlocked phone, for a good price with a robust set of features, it's not a bad choice.
I use a Nokia e51, much cheaper. No where near as nice of course, but it's fine for the usual phone stuff plus Google Reader (via Opera Mini), checking a bit of email, etc. I bought it unlocked (the unending horror of a long contract before put me off anything except SIM-only monthly ones).
The camera and media capabilities are bordering on non-existent though. The camera filled with dust immediately and there is only a 2.5 mm jack so it's impossible to actually listen to anything on it. I got a Shuffle and an SLR to fix that.
On the other hand it's a bit smaller than an iPhone and the battery lasts longer. And loads cheaper...

I thought Palm just fixed that.
Wouldn't be surprised if it switches every time a patch comes out.
