So for about $1800, you get about a week in Japan, admission to Tokyo Game Show, a tour of Camelot (Golden Sun developers among other things), and the chance to meet with the game writer of Higurashino Nakukoroni Matsuri (it's a visual novel that has an anime adaptation that was released here as When They Cry - really good horror series). If I had a couple extra thousand dollars lying around, I'd be all over this.
Like literally it is just a nondescript brick building with the Nintendo logo outside. If someone hadn't said "Oh hey Nintendo" loudly most of us wouldn't have even noticed.

Hah yeah, a friend that went over with the Jet Program was like, "we went looking for Nintendo, and found it in some industrial slum in Kyoto... and this is where the creativity comes from"
The TGS show would be interesting to see, but I wonder how much the language barrier would be a problem. Could you talk to people running all the booths or would you be stuck just looking at things?

In general, Japanese can't speak English (or don't dare to).
Though I'm sure that a convention full with gamers will have a higher concentration of English speaking people than usual. Still, as for the game devs themselves - those few from Japan that I saw in Leipzig last year all had tolks.
I'm pretty sure it will be a bit of a problem if you want to talk to people. If you just want to play some games you just grab the controller and have a go.

That makes sense. And the PR people at the booths are more likely to speak English. I'm a dev, so I prefer to spend my time talking to the devs rather than playing the games. But as much as I'd love to go to TGS I don't have the time and money to get to all the US conventions I want to get to. But GDC 2010 here I come!

Screw Tokyo Game Show, there are better things to see and do in Japan.
Like visiting the giant toilet shaped restaurant wherein everthing they serve you looks like shit?
^True story
I want to play a Senko no Ronde cabinet.

Efficient, huh?
I believe that means a room with a twin-size bed.
Man a room to yourself? No wonder the trip is so expensive.
