The "We might as well discuss the Apple Tablet, too" thread
from what i've read apple wants to market it as a media/gaming device. but then again its all probably just speculation.
If anything it will kill the Modbook market, or what there was of it. I was looking into it and they want either for you to give them your macbook and pay them $1,200 to turn it into a modbook, or pay around $2,500 for a modbook. or for a modbook pro they want you to give them your MBP and around $2,200 for them to turn it into a Modbook Pro, or pay around $5,000 for one.
If you think about it as an ipod touch with a larger screen and (presumably) more space, it kinda makes sense. Combine the PMP aspects of the ipod touch with the usability of a "real web browsing" like a netbook and give iphone-esque 3G (and beyond) access and you've got the essential do-it-all personal appliance.
I have heard people tell me on more than one occasion that their iphone "changed their life". Probably a bit of an overstatement, but if you put the same feature set and more into something that's still relatively portable you've got the recipe for a successful "I can't leave home without my iPad" scenario.
Since we're going on pure speculation, I'm imagining they will give it full phone functionality via bluetooth headset, perhaps even "sharing" the phone/data plan with the iphone. At the very least you could get some cool voip stuff going on with a headset.

Smartphones are nice because they can fit in your pocket. This thing is as big as a laptop, but it's running a smartphone OS and has no keyboard. Sounds awesome. Maybe if it had pen support so I could scrawl down formulas and stuff quickly.

AT&T hasn't even got iPhone tethering worked out yet, I look forward to the $60/month tablet add-on.
I have been hankering for a fully featured multi-touch tablet computer -- a proper computer, with a full OS and a hard drive -- for god knows how long. If this is a crippled piece of shit flash memory based itouch-XXL I'll be pissed.

No. If this turns out to be just a giant PDA then it will fail miserably and apple will have effectively murdered tablet PCs forever.
The first thing I'd want to do with this thing is use it for art. Boot up Photoshop, turn off as many toolboxes as possible, and go nuts. If they use the same screen tech as the iPhone/iPod Touch this isn't looking very likely.
2) No clamshell:
Laptop screens are already easy enough to break as it is. If this thing is 10"-13" with nothing protecting the screen I see it breaking extremely easily. I'm already paranoid enough about my iPod Touch and PSP as it is. (While we're on this topic: Scratches: Jesus Christ putting a screen protector on this thing is going to be painful. It's already hard enough on the PSP or iPod)
3) No built-in keyboard:
Who the fuck is going to carry around a keyboard for this thing if it doesn't include one? If I'm in Starbucks or at a park or wherever and I want to jot down a few quick notes or write a letter, or fuck, browse the forums here, typing on a touch-screen keyboard is going to be painful. It's fine for the iPhone because it's a goddamn phone. You type quickie little texts and e-mails, usually not going over 40 characters.
There's a few more but those are the few that jump to mind right away.
But, as usual, Apple surprises me. So I'm not counting this thing out yet.
I'm thiiis close to buying a netbook and making myself a shiny new Hackintosh, but the one thing that's making me pause is the potential of a sub-$500 Apple tablet.
Of course, remembering that Apple is the company that debut the MacBook Air for $1700, I'm sure this won't be the case.

It's possible to make a stylus that works with the iPhone/iTouch capacitance screen (third-party ones exist), the main question is if Apple would embrace it or if you'd be stuck with aftermarket solutions. If they've done some work in handwriting recognition, it wouldn't surprise me if Apple throws in their own stylus that's designed to be optional (with some clever on-device storage mechanism) for inputting text and GD work.
Then again, if that's the case we're veering dangerously close to Newton 2.0.

You used to see 'em all the time between like '02 and '06 but all of a sudden they just dried up.
Edit: Meaning tablet computers, not wacom tablets and the like.

The iPhone has the advantage of being able to fit into your pocket.
Unless this thing ships for under 500, then I don't see the point.
Except to steal money from Apple zombies.
we also talk about other random shit and clown upon each other
