Car CD Players

I've inherited an older Jetta with a mediocre stereo deck and faceplate. Looking to buy a new one that reads data CDs and/or has an auxiliary input.

My question is this. Since a stereo deck is already installed, do I need to buy a complete CD-MP3 player, or do I just need to buy a faceplate? I'm looking at picking up a Kenwood KDC-138.

I'm pretty sure you would need to buy the whole unit as the display plate doesn't have anything to do with its actual capabilities...

Or am I misunderstanding your question?

Bolded, unless he means "do I need a new dash/trim kit"?

If there's already an aftermarket deck in there, you shouldn't need to do anything other than pull old/install new. If it's still the factory one, then you'll need a dash kit likely otherwise it'll look like a ghetto-install, or may not even have any mounting rails/screwholes ready.

More info on what's currently in there would be good too. I'm assuming it's just a head unit, no outboard amps or anything, using factory wiring. Get a wiring harness and your new head unit, and you can swap that sucker in less than two hours (I'm assuming you've never done a stereo install before.)

My question is answered! Thanks for the thorough and expeditious replies.

EDIT: Oh, and there's already an aftermarket deck in the car, so installation should be easier. Nothing a Chilton manual and a few hours of frustration can't handle.

Crutchfield is the best place to order stereos from, imho. They include EVERYTHING; wiring harnesses, dash kits, keys to remove the old factory stereo, EVERYTHING. awesome prices too.

Also, don't be afraid to install it yourself. They are hella-easy
