This is the OOC thread for A Race Around Eberron in Eighty Days. This game is a bit of a homage to one of my favourite authors, Jules Verne who wrote the original Race Around the World. Obviously that book comes highly recommended in terms of mood and theme.
Infidel - Human Artificer (Leader)
Incenjucar - Changeling Assassin (Striker)
romanqwerty - Halfling Rogue (Striker)
TSI|Awesome - Changeling Psion (Controller)
Bizarre - Warforged Paladin (Defender)
Powerpuppies - Human Fighter (Defender)
Are the "scruffy ruffians" suitable enough to take on a challenge of this proportion. Although people have suggested to me what they want to play, obviously this is the thread for discussing that in more detail.
Casual Eddy -Warforged Warlock (Striker) - Fell off the Train!
Jen - Dragonborn Barbarian (Striker) - Wandered the wrong way into the fog.
The simplest way of thinking about this game is that it's based on:
Travel by Land.
Travel by Sea.
Travel by Air.
And then things going wrong and ending up in weird places.
You will need:
Maptools beta 59.

Lady Adeline Molyneux
The Clifftop Adventurers' Guild in Sharn was packed more than usual on a stormy night, as the famed explorer Ian Escelle had recently returned from a successful expedition to Xen'drik and had bought back a priceless artifact. Ian was always fond of throwing such extravagant parties upon his return and the wine was free as a result, but it still didn't ever help Adeline feel any better. She sat slumped in her chair hidden near the back of the room and looked on the proceedings sadly, having hardly touched any of the complimentary food or drink. Lost in thought she slowly became oblivious to the world around her as the evening progressed.
The short, half-elven woman was always a curiosity at the Guild as she had no particular record of adventuring or exploring anything at all - much to some members disgust. Although a member of the nobility, she made a conscious habit of never actually dressing like a typical noble and often had scruffy hair or on a rare good day, tied back into a ponytail. She always performed the same little ritual once a week, coming back to this place where she had met her the man she loved in the vague hope...
SLAM!!!
The sharp sound woke the noblewoman from her daydream and she found herself being stared at from all around as a tall, pale man with a thin mustache stared down at her - one gloved hand placed threateningly on her table. Her brow furrowed instantly and her face became red with embarrassment - a former rival of her husband and one of the main detractors of her continued presence within the Adventurers' Guild.
"What do you want LaCroix? I am not in the mood for conversing with Toads tonight?" the woman snapped without really thinking, only drawing a sly smile from LaCroix who began to remove his gloves.
"Petty insults is it now? I would have thought that far below you... Madame Adeline." LaCroix said with special emphasis on the Madame, meeting Adelines equally icy stare.
"It's Lady until I have proof otherwise LaCroix and you know that." Adeline replied, an undercurrent of seething rage coming through in her voice. LaCroix laughed at this and smiled again, as if trying to provoke Adeline even further.
"Of course, my apologies... Lady... Adeline. I meant no disrespect to your late husband whom was a man I most truly respected." Lacroix replied, his tone of voice clearly giving away the poorly disguised venom within his statement.
Adaline considered the benefits and drawbacks of punching LaCroix in his skinny little face in front of a great number of other guild members. Only just managing to hold back, Adeline decided that she had overstayed her welcome and began to collect her things.
"I must apologize LaCroix but I have far better things to do and I am afraid that I have other commitments right now than trading insults with you. Not tonight anyway." Adeline shot a murderous look at the man before beginning to leave, when LaCroix chuckled softly and said "Well, I am sure you have some very dangerous knitting duties to attend to."
Adeline stopped dead and bit her lip and her anger finally getting the better of her, she spun around and yelled back "You're just a complete wanker and any idiot could easily prove themselves to be twice the adventurer you are!". LaCroix simply cocked his head to the side, as murmured whispers began to arise from the surrounding crowd and then he simply smiled. "Really? That is quite the bold claim there my dear Adeline and perhaps I should like to take you up on such a challenge?".
All eyes transfixed themselves on Adeline in an instant as LaCroix continued.
"Perhaps you can take a challenge that I once offered your late husband, which he did in fact refuse I must disappointingly admit as it was just too... insane for him." LaCroix gave a sinister smile as he spoke.
Adeline was a lot of things and while she was not much for actually fighting, if there was one thing she wasn't it was a coward. Combined with a terrible temper, Adeline was frequently one to allow her temper to get the better of her before rational thought could step in and prevent trouble. This was - much to her regret later that night - one of those moments where her temper would get the better of her.
"When my husband comes back, you are going to eat your words LaCroix and -" before she could continue LaCroix cut her off declaring "Ah yes, always riding the coat tails of your husband - afterall what have you accomplished that permits you such free rein here? After all a real guild member would have been out looking instead of hanging around hoping the dead would come back".
Adeline moved with lightning speed, crossing the short distance between the two of them and standing right in front of LaCroix. Although around a foot shorter than him, LaCroix gulped slightly as the enraged figure in front of him said only four words, stunned the crowd around them.
"I. ACCEPT. YOUR. CHALLENGE."
The normally cold and conformed composure of LaCroix was rapidly shattered and he only managed to blurt out "But... but you don't even know what it is yet!". To his Adeline simply responded with a tone that could intimidate a dragon "I don't care what it is, you name your damn challenge and I will beat your sorry ass back to Khyber and back."
LaCroix looked around nervously as attention turned back towards him and composed himself before beginning "A Race...".
"A Race?" Adeline interjected in disbelief.
"Oh yes a race. A Race Around Eberron in Only Eighty Days. We leave from here and then whoever gets back first within the time limit is the winner." LaCroix smirked as the intense stare from Adeline soon turned into a look of confusion and then horror as she realized what she had got herself into. Gulping down heavily, Adeline gave a faux smile to match LaCroixs' satisfied smirk before responding "I will meet you here tomorrow to sort out the rules in full and may the best woman win."
LaCroix took Adelines hand and shook it, before stepping aside and declaring to the now completely flabbergasted onlookers "The challenge has been accepted ladies and gents, one for the history books of the guild I am sure!". Turning back to Adeline and tipping his hat "I shall see you tomorrow morning and I do hope you don't lose your nerve and back out. It would truly disappoint your dear Husband so." With this LaCroix strode out of the Guild while others congratulated Adeline on standing up for herself or returned back to their celebrations. To Adeline their voices rapidly blurred into one as she wondered what she had truly managed to get herself into this time.
"I am going to need some help..." Adeline mumbled under her breath.
Here are some general things:
You have 500 starting gold.
If you want a dragonmark, please just bring it up with me first and we'll talk about how it might affect things.
Please post characters on mythweavers so I can put them in the OP. For that matter, what you're playing as well to make my life easier.
You can have an Eberron or general background, but not an FR or Scales of War one.

I haven't chosen my alchemical goodies yet, I'm probably going to spend my money on loading up with all those.
You already get Level+2 creation of alchemic items from Mark of Making. I dunno, it seems like a bit of a waste to me to spend another entire feat just to get another +1?
...Actually, really, the feat that's doing nothing for you is Mark of Making, actually. Between Artificer Ritual Casting and Master Mixer, I don't think the feat does anything at all, except being able to use Enchant Magic Item at a higher level, which Master Crafter would give you more of a benefit on.
Considering how utterly unuseful the feat is to you, I wouldn't doubt Aegeri just letting you have it for free. You wouldn't even really be getting something for nothing; you'd be getting, well, nothing for nothing.
Also, for "scruffy ruffians" we sure do have a lot of ritualists and alchemists.
Mark of Making allows me to make items as if I "were two levels higher", not "at my level + 2" as the other feats.
My understanding was they stacked, hence the different verbiage.
Ah. So you just want to be able to create retardedly high level items? I'm not so sure they stack, so let's just stop this conversation here and let Aegeri make a judgement when he wakes up?
Expect explosions and a spectrum of vials and flasks hanging from my person.
While I was about to say they didn't stack, on thinking about it (especially the costs of higher level consumables to make them in any decent amounts as well) I don't really see much of a problem with it right now. He'd be able to make items of his level + 5, but as neither feat I see reduces the costs I don't see this as being imbalanced anywhere.
Edit: Also if anyone is confused, Roman will be deleveling his mans. We'll probably not be starting this weekend, it's most likely we'll be starting next weekend.
I'll probably have one or two simple recipes atm, spending the rest on my stock which I can't make myself (yet).

Also Eddy, I desire your character sheet or I may be forced to make you a giant space squirrel. I have stats and everything. Don't make me do this man.
For now.
MUAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
just posting that this pic would be awesome for a warforged warlock
Edit: 10 minutes!
We won't be able to play today as a result.
Where you at dawg?
Edit: Not recruiting anymore sorry! One of the peoples I asked came through.
So it will start at 10:30 PM US Eastern.
Start at 9:30 PM US Central.
And that will be 12:30 PM Australian Time (Sydney).
A few solid hours would be awesome.
You should sleep better knowing that I have made all the encounters twice as diabolical as they originally were. MUAHAHAHHAHA.
Edit:
I have watched Hero of Faith enough for my liking now. I've decided after noting that 3/6 people have taken this feat in Shipwrecked and how horribly abusive it gets that I will in fact move to do something about it (because otherwise it turns out that the Church of avengering is unusually popular among everyone with wisdom who uses weapons).
Hero of Faith now has the following text instead of the original divine power text:
"Once per day, you can use the oath of enmity power. You do not regain the use of the power if the target drops to 0 hit points."
This now means it can only be used once per day. It still lasts for the entire encounter though. It's quite frankly too good for a feat that costs only wisdom 15 to get and can be used every encounter. When I have over half my players in every game if they have a decent wisdom score planning on getting this feat, there is a clear problem that needs to be solved. You can freely retrain the feat out if you want however, but I am actually not convinced this still isn't too good compared to other multiclass feats.
Immediate Interrupts
An attack or action that you want to use an immediate interrupt against must be done before the action resolves. In the case of movement, before the creature stops movement. In the case of an attack, the immediate interrupt must be declared before damage is taken. Once whatever creature affected takes damage, you cannot respond to it with an immediate interrupt anymore (as the action has fully resolved and ended).
Ideally, you should give about 5-10 seconds after being hit by a monster to allow your allies to make an immediate interrupt. If you take damage, you are hit and they are no longer able to respond. When you take damage on your token, that resolves the action and immediate interrupts to that action are no longer possible. This is the same for monsters as well - when they take damage they may not respond to the triggering action (as it has now ended).
If the target doesn't take damage, it's a missed attack (or it doesn't deal damage) you have the same 5-10 second window to declare any immediate interrupts, like increasing your attack bonus with the likes of a wizards wand accuracy boost.
Basically you must use your immediate interrupts when the action that would trigger it occurs. If you don't, you cannot retroactively change it once the next action has begun and I'm no longer going to allow it to do so. At the same time, I'm going to give you a bit of time between monster turns to react or decide what to do (see multiple attacks below - massive change to the way monsters work!).
Obviously common sense should be applied. There is no need to wait after moving near an enemy if nobody has any reactions against it and neither do the monsters. This is mostly here to resolve fiddling with powers that boost defenses against enemy attacks and monsters with attacks that trigger on being missed/hit by attacks from PCs (the two most common situations).
Immediate reactions
You must wait until the action fully resolves before you may use an immediate reaction. In the case of movement, you must wait until the creature stops moving. In the case of an attack, when the target of the attack takes damage you can make a reaction to it (if the attack misses, that technically resolves it as well and you can react to it). The same sort of thing as above, ideally you should allow a few moments after an action for these things. Once a new action has started, moving, attacking you've lost your window and cannot react anymore.
Multiple attack powers
All multiple attack powers must be separate attacks now. Twin Strike should be two different attacks, a dragons Draconic fury should be (in the case of the dragon you fought on Sunday) five separate attacks (see below). Good examples of how this should be done are Lains Storm of Blades and (ironically) the Mariliths ability to make six basic attacks. You need to decide if you are going to apply extra damage effects or similar on each attack separately (if they can only be applied on a limited basis), you cannot roll all your attacks and decide to apply this retroactively anymore (unless it specifically allows you to do so like Hunters Quarry actually states it can).
With regards to the first couple of things above, you cannot make an Immediate Interrupt/Immediate reaction once a new attack has begun. All creatures/PCs with multiple attacks should give a few moments between each attack (don't just hammer the button!) to give me or other players a chance to interrupt/react.
Here is an example from the Adamantine Dragon of how multiple attacks should look now:
Note that in every case, the next attack does not occur until damage is taken. The point here is to allow you to decide when you want to use immediate interrupts or reactions, giving you time to do so and leading to less strange situations. Especially because enemies using multiple attacks and similar becomes much more common by epic tier!
Obviously this does not apply to close burst/blast and area attacks. One macro is sufficient for these.
What this doesn't effect
You can always retroactively (and in some cases have to):
Roll a saving throw if you forget - you have to do this anyway so even if you forget you still can. Note that if this allows you to make an opportunity attack you could have made, say you were stunned and then weren't I will allow you to make that opportunity attack you were entitled to - this is a special exception.
Apply or end a state
Add bonus damage if you forgot to do it that would have occurred on the attack anyway, eg a bonus to damage to attacks from raging (unless it is an immediate interrupt, reaction or you have to choose to apply it, then you cannot).
Similarly, if you forgot you had relevant damage reduction you may adjust your HP accordingly.
Add or subtract HP from the beginning of your turn due to regeneration/ongoing damage.
Important: Maptools Upgrade!
We are upgrading to Maptools Beta 59.
You also have a curious item called a Fell Fetish. This item prevents the owner from being the target of attacks from Fell Taints they have not attacked. At the moment though how or why this thing works isn't fully within your knowledge...
Edit: Actually I don't think I'm going to be up for this. I think I might have to go back to the doctor (now am in fact), because this is not good right now and my gut has just rebelled against the machine (to say the least). There just isn't any way I'm going to deal with this pain and get through everything while cogent enough to actually think about things other than "Argh blinding pain". Sorry about this, it's been pretty unfortunate that my life is just conspiring against me right now in every way (if it's not being sick it's some drama at work occurring - I'm getting really tired of this happening, especially on DnD days )

I'm getting a bit crushed by real life right now I'm sorry to say.
