Last week, my third 360 gave up the ghost -- and so did I; today I picked up a 80 GB PS3. And Ratchet & Clank Future (great game, BTW). Fuck Microsofts shoddy quality control, fuck 'em I say!
I now need some assurance that PS3's won't just seize up and die every 8-12 months. And some advice on worthy games, especially PSN stuff - I'm especially looking for good games that may have flown under the radar, so to speak. In short:
I like online shooty stuff (although I suck at it), so I'm thinking 'Warhawk' here. Other candidates?
Also looking at Calling All Cars and Fat Princess. Fat Princess has no local multiplayer tho', right?
A good fighting game with awesome graphics would be...?
Uncharted is a good Tomb Raider clone, yes/no?
When the hell is that God of War III supposed to come out?
I want to hear your opinions, even if they're only tangentially related!

Bah, XoB's a hater. Uncharted is an excellent game with a few uneven parts.
Resistance 2 is fun, and if you like Ratchet & Clank check out the PSN RCF game, Quest For Booty. It's less shooty and more puzzley than Tools of Destruction, plus a lot more robot pirates.
Warhawk I use to play religiously. The servers have been reduced signifigantly and playing it now basicly means your going to be pitting yourself against veterain players. I love the game but it can be very frustrating you've been warned.
Uncharted is more Gears than Tomb Raider, excelent game must play for every ps3 owner IMO. Been having a total blast with Fat princess and yes it lacks same console multi, honestly you might want to wait till the patch out the online suckage. Hopefully it won't turn into the next castle crashers(in terms of waiting for a fix not awsome-ness).
Blazblue for the 2d fighting game suggestion. Faster and way more variaty in charactors than SF4 even though they have a bigger roster there realy isn't ANY similarity in any of BB's 12. Check out some videos and the thread here.
He also just got a PS3, pretty much has a lot of the same interests as you, with plenty of feed back from everyone on games to get.
GoW3 I believe is set for March of 2010.
As for PS3 failure rates... it happens. Launch units run much hotter than current units and have the greatest risk of receiving the Yellow Light of Death. My 60G died, but I currently have a newer 80G model. It runs much cooler and quieter, have had it for about a year now, running solid. I've also heard of some peoples BR drives failing on them. I suggest to buy some compressed air, and clean your PS3 (while it's off) ever so often to prevent dust build up that can lead to overheating.

Are you aware of Microsoft's excellent repair policy?
Yeah, seriously. I'm happy you're among the ranks of PS3 owners now, but if you still have your 360 on you and it red-ringed, they should replace it no problem.
Also, Infamous is far and away the best game of the year so far, so make sure to pick that up. I personally feel that Uncharted is the best game on the system and the best game this gen, though others don't love it quite as much as I do. I wholeheartedly recommend it though.
I had no problems with the two first RROD's, but this third time it doesn't even give me a blink of red. It just starts, then nothing -- the controller won't even log on, and the screen is dead. This third one beat the previous record, though -- 14 months, just enough to run out of warranty. Oh well.
I like that the PS3 is noiseless, though. Can you get a good bluetooth mouse/keyboard combo for it?

Not sure I'd spend this kinda money on a keyboard (BB has it listed at $83.99) but this is probably the type of keyboard that is best suited for chillnx on the couch.

This.
Every PS3 owner needs to play Uncharted, it should be a law. An awesome, awesome law.
MGS4 is a must-purchase too, though I'd really suggest playing the MGS1, 2 and 3 first.

Mine does that too, the no ring no controller thing, it just usually means that I managed to wiggle my HDMI cable loose.
Oh, and maybe its different with the newer PS3's but I don't leave mine on for too long during the summer because of the fact that it turns into a giant black space heater. Though the 500gig drive I dropped in there almost makes up for it :P
I fear Uncharted is overhyped. Its a pretty linear game, and hardly has the depth of puzzles that I've seen in Tomb Raider games (I haven't played newer TR games, and admittedly, I'm not up to double digit chapters in Uncharted yet.) It excels at graphics and story.
Fat Princess is fun, but NO local MP.
Demon's Souls is worth investigating. It's a 3rd person adventure RPG and the spiritual successor to King's Field, with an interesting take on online play.
if you're even vaguely wafting towards local multiplayer, pixeljunk monsters is utterly essential. though it's not my game of the generation (that honour has to go to uncharted), i've put more hours into it than just about anything since transport tycoon
Yeah both PJ monsters and eden are good fun. Though the co-op in eden can be punishing. Another good game from the psn is Super stardust. All 3 have demos to check out.
Man, that sucks. I must be lucky ::knock on wood::, I've had my 360 for almost 2yrs now and never had a RROD. But, I do plan on getting a PS3 as soon as God of War III drops. Then I'm gonna have a field day playing games I never got to play, like Drake's Fortune, Killzone 2, Ratchet and Clank, Valkyria Chronicles, etc.,

Why would you say that? Your 360 is going to explode aaaaaany second now.

Realy man that's like daring a man on a ledge to jump.
Kidding asside I actualy had to send in my launch ps3 in for repairs after about 6 months of polygon/texture errors and lock ups I got fed up with it. Nice thing is they always send back the same modle so still rocking the 60gig model. Just not running Folding at home the whole time I'm not playing anymore.
It tends to be the 40gb that have a habit of not reading Blu Rays but even then thats infrequent. Ive had mine since near launch and its locked up twice while playing a game and I didnt lose much progress in either time and these events were months if not years apart.
Good fighting game : UFC 2009. Loving it at the moment. Quite a nice use of 5.1 sound too! Nothing beats knocking a guy down and the crowd going apeshit from every corner of the room! Good play mechanics and very decent graphics - lifelike rather than fireballs and <kerpow> all over the place.
Well it was my own fault. I basicly had my PS3 on for 3 months straight and after I started my second playthrough of DMC4 I started noticing polygons that wern't suppose to be rendered visualy. Think 3 months of warhawk>FAH>WH>FAH cooked my GPU.
since I have the PS3 since launch and still love it. As for stuff to get.

oh yeah, if you don't already have like 10 copies of Street Fighter Alpha 2 then it is a real steal to get it off PSN. It's what like, $7 or something?

There isn't. I mean, concerning the PS3 not seizing up.
Granted, mine hasn't either, so I'm still holding up to hope, but it's just a matter of living dangerously.
Also, I'm sure someone has already recommended Blazblue, but I'm going to recommend it again. Lot of fun.
Have you switched to Linux yet? If not, you're still giving Microsoft money and thus the man wins.
Also Prototype is better than inFamous, but I'd give inFamous a rent. Uncharted is great, except the fucking random incredibly hard parts. And I'll have to restart VC, but it was good from what I played from it.

No one ever said stickin' it to The Man was easy. Especially given that Linux on the PS3, by almost all accounts, seems to suck. The cause requires sacrifice.

How about Street Fighter IV, maybe some Soul Calibur IV if you're into that.
Warhawk is a decent suggestion. Still has a decent amount of people playing it.
Haven't really liked any of the exclusive PSN games I've tried, but you can't go wrong with MM9.
Uncharted is a boring Gears of War clone with an Indiana Jones skin.
NEXT Year is most likely for God of War III.
Resistance 2 is fun, and if you like Ratchet & Clank check out the PSN RCF game, Quest For Booty. It's less shooty and more puzzley than Tools of Destruction, plus a lot more robot pirates.

Oh and ncharted is supposed to be good, but Uncharted 2 is supposed to be Unicorn sex and that's out in a few months, it has MP too.
Are you enduring the torture that is waiting for the last guardian to come out? You should be.
And get Blazblue.

But really any wireless/USB keyboard should work.
I happen to be ramping up my playing of online PS3 games and I'm trying to figure out what the best deal is for wireless headsets. . .
will any bluetooth headset do? or does it have to be some kind of branded thing?
Most bluetooth headsets should work, but your best bet is the official Sony headset (the one that comes with Socom).
edit: it's sold separately as well.
