CPU instability

Trying to nail down a PC issue that's cropped up suddenly.

MSI P35 Platinum mobo, 8GB crucial ddr2 RAM, q6600 CPU, vista 64, ATI 3870.

Started Blue screening out of nowhere when under stress.
Updated drivers (including mobo), ran a check disk on the drive with no errors, updated mobo bios, and ran memtest for ~12 hours with no errors.

Looking into the bsod errors I was getting pointed to CPU problems. This led to my noticing the CPU temp was higher than normal, running Intel Burn test showed that the CPU failed the test. I under clocked the CPU and improved stability some, but it still intermittently failed the burn test and would blue screen (just less often).
I've replaced the CPU fan, the temps are now down to ~40-43 degrees average under load, but the system will still bsod fairly frequently and still fails the burn test.

Thinking that perhaps the CPU had suffered damage I replaced it with a q9550 but I am still encountering the same errors with the burn test (still pointing to CPU issues).

At this point I'm not sure what is going on with it... it ran fine for ~6 months with the initial setup and no issues at all.

Any ideas what else would potentially be causing this?

It could be either the PSU or the motherboard. If you can borrow one (or have a spare) try swapping the PSU out and then see if the problem persists.

Just replaced the PSU with another I have and it made it all the way to pass 10 before failing as unstable (it usually failed at ~ pass 2-4 previously).

Seems like everything I do makes it a little bit better but still fails (It has passed all 10 passes before however).

    ugh, such a pain.

Well, it's consistently failing on the 2nd-3rd pass now, and still doing so even after I under clocked the CPU down to 2.4ghz to see if it made any difference.

It has not bsod'd on me since replacing the cpu (yet), so maybe it's just instability under stress I'll never make it to now.. but it still has me leery of what is the root of the entire problem. The only thing left to replace that I can think of is the motherboard... at that point it's essentially an entirely new pc... joy.

if your mobo is less that a year old (3 for asus boards) then you should be able to RMA it if you have tracked it to most likely being the mobo. that would be my suggestion at this point.

yeah, I opened a ticket with MSI to see if I can get it RMA'd, otherwise I gotta shell out more money on a mobo and hope that's the last of the issue.

Is your CPU and Heat sink properly mounted? Did you use a thermal paste properly?

It is, I wound up getting an aftermarket (zalman) with a mounting bracket just to ensure it was being cooled properly. The original fan used the push pins and one side came loose slightly resulting in increased heat. This one is down solid on all 4 corners and keeping the CPU at ~ 33-45 depending upon load.

Paste is artic silver, applied correctly. CPU (new) is a retail boxed.

well, appears that my mobo is just a couple months past warranty.. oh well.

Any good recommendations for a 775 board for 8GB DDR2 ram and a q9550 CPU? Only stipulation other than being a goodboard is needing onboard sound and lan.
