So, no-one's implicated as guilty, no-one's on the docket, no-one has any bad stuff attached to their name at all? And we can abstain? !Abstain. EVERYONE is innocent until proven guilty.

    Day 1 abstinence doesn't matter.

"Jury nullification cannot happen on day 1, because there is no docket yet."

There is no penalty for not voting today.

Hah! Spoken like a true novice. Look around you, see that guy sitting on the bench outside of the Clerk's Office? He was here for a DUI...blew a .27 and vomited on the cop who stopped him. But he's sitting there in street clothes right now because his public defender proved that the cop didn't have reasonable suspicion to pull him over in the first place. So does that make him innocent? Or does he just get a pass because the cop didn't dot all of his "i"s and cross all of his "t"s?

How about that lady right there? She got caught trying to sneak several thousand pills of oxycontin onto a flight out of JFK using her 3-year old's teddy bear. She's walking free because some rookie screwed up the chain of custody and now, even though she admitted that the teddy bear was hers, they can't put the bear into evidence and another drug smuggler goes free.

Those are the easy ones. Look at SVU. Stabler and Benson spend six months tracking this child pornographer, and not one of the ones that just swaps videos, this guy is one of the bastards that makes the videos. They finally get him and the scumbag confesses. The only problem? Stabler screwed up reading the guy his Miranda rights so the confession was tossed and he looks to be back on the street.

    Innocent? Hardly.

It's all just a game, and let me tell you something, they've been playing it a hell of a lot longer than we have. Sure we've got the formal training and classroom time. Some of us are even big fancy lawyers with our grey suits and mahogany desks, but ask yourself, what's more helpful? Reading about this crap in a book, or actually getting out there and getting your hands dirty? Practical experience is the best kind, and these jokers have it in spades.

I for one believe SpectralSpork exudes a certain shiftiness that seems inherent to the more devious members of the criminal element. Let's see what he has to say for himself.

So hey, Jules. I have never been on Jury duty before; this is a first for me. You're really asking me to condemn someone to a lifetime on jail without any evidence at all, with no information to go on? Is this how court works? Seriously?

So I can pick someone just because I don't like the way they talk, or how they wear white shoes after Labor Day, and this is encouraged? Are you insane?

Fine, you're talking about a certain shiftiness inherent amongst the criminal element. I'll trust your judgement, suggest that !SpectralSpork needs to spend his last days on Death Row waiting for the chair, and let you take the rap if we end up condemning an innocent man, based on your superior experience.

If you did, I didn't notice. I'm not sure if that says worse things about me, or you, though.

Seems a little defensive for two votes, though. There's probably at least one other up there, thinking about it. Actually, does that put you in the lead for the cells, now?

Is it normal for a Jury member to feel guilt over the name they wrote on their little bit of paper?

Because I'm not feeling guilty for condemning this possibly innocent man to death. I am feeling MANLY.

(Honestly, I know that votign on the first day is good. I was just getting into the role of a newbie Jury member who was all 'omg!' over having to condemn someone to being GUILTY based on a lack of evidence and a healthy dose of mob rule.)

This is our only chance this game for a good, old-fashioned The Lottery-type stoning, enjoy it while it lasts!

For the rest of the game we're going to be chafing under the strain of due process and habeas corpus and all that other...stuff.
