Okay... not quite urgent, but I'm bored out of my fucking skull in my temporary apartment.
I have a mac, and we just got our internet switched to the apartment, and my dad's computer has internet (he has a PC)just fine, however, my mac IS connected to the network but my Browser and AIM don't work. How can I fix this?
you say "IS connected". what are you basing this on? what are browser/im doing that makes you say they "don't work" (ie: saying there is no connection available and/or seemingly having a connection but just not loading anything)
I only asked the ISP question cause I know at work we have a Verizon Actiontec router that if a Mac connects to it blows the config and takes down the internet.... Hard to believe, but amazing...

No. Those actiontec POS's are evil. They have evil and stupid built right into them.
As far as the Op's Issue. You might find out what encryption (if any) and find out if you are allowed to alter it. I had a mac try to connect here in my apartment and the shitty actiontec router kept screwing up on the WPA settings but WEP worked fine.
Can you try bypassing the router completely and plug directly into the modem? We should first rule out that the problem doesn't lie with your computer.
If it works, then try plugging the router back into the modem and your computer back into the router. If that works, then the problem could lie with your wireless.
So, the first things I'd check would be the following.
In System Preferences>Network>AirPort, clicky the Advanced button and then click across to the TCP/IP tab. Is IPv4 set to configure using DHCP? If not, correct this, okay, apply, whatever, see if it works.
If it is set to configure via DHCP, check the IP address it's been assigned. Is it in the address range of the network (pretty sure it tells you if it's using a self assigned IP, which it'll do if it can't grab one from DHCP for some reason... think it displays this on the main summary page thingy)? If you're not sure, check it against your dad's machine. Do an ipconfig /all in the command prompt and compare his assigned address with yours. If the first three groups of numbers are the same, with different numbers in the last group, then all is likely well.
If you're getting an out of range IP address, but the subnet mask and router values are correct (again, you can check on your dad's machine with the aforementioned command), you can try the "configure using DHCP with manual address" option, and just assign yourself an address. If none of these values are correct, just try a manual configuration.
Assuming all this is right, or if after correcting this you still have the same issue, clicky the DNS tab and make sure you have some servers listed there. If you don't (hell, even if you do, it's worth a shot anyway), try adding the OpenDNS servers (208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220) and see if you have any luck.

I'd also recommend this as a first step. Unplug the wireless router and instead plug you computer in to the modem. Also, after you plug your computer directly to the modem, make sure you power cycle the modem. Some cable modems really don't like having devices changed on them and need to be turned off and turned back on so that they reset.
Okay, so nothing is working. but I noticed that the bluetooth, the built-in ethernet, and the built in fire-wire aren't connected. would that have something to do with it? Should the ethernet be connected?

I don't know much about bluetooth so I'll let someone else answer that one.
Ethernet should be connected I think? You should have an ethernet card which should be connected somehow.
Firewire is just a fancy USB type connection and has nothing to do with internet at all.
TL;dr why am I even posting if I don't know my shit :P
Yes, ethernet is the network card. It must be connected. I don't know much about macs so tell me, are there ports to connect with a wire and do you have an ethernet cable?
Because if you can, you need to plug it into the router. You do have a router right?

I have a modem and no router apparently...
I connected an ethernet cable to the modem and my computer and now the internet is working perfectly fine. But I want wireless!
Your modem probably doesnt have a wireless capabilities ..... go to like your local tech store and get a cheezy wirelesss router plug the modem in the wan port then go through the quick install and you should be set to go .....
DONT FORGET to setup the wireless security

Hm... but my dad's computer is working fine wirelessly.
OK so then you have wireless.... when you click on the wireless icon does it show the networks available if so click on your dad's network and then you can connect to it if it has security enter the key if not just connect.

Also forgot ask your dad if his network is setup for dynamic ip addresses ( the router gives you an ip address and the gateway to get to the internet ) or if he has that turned off and you have the set static ip addresses where you have to tell it where to send the signal.
edit: you know what router model he has?

But on a more serious note, are you connecting via Wireless or are you physically connected to his router with a cable?

Restart the wireless router by disconnecting the power and then connecting it back in.
