I think we have one last page left. And it's going to end with intrigue and a cliffhanger of sorts.
Mike and Jerry are always talking about making a comic fit the joke, and not the other way around. A joke needs four panels? It has them. But three is key, usually. CAD syndrome is more panels for no reason other than to fill the same four panel scheme.
I just think we could have used some more frames in these comics to show action. Or at least those movement lines or stink lines or something.
or instead of movement lines he could have borrowed a page from dave gibbon's book and made movement lines out of things like cigarette smoke or water splashing up from stepping into a puddle (it IS raining, afterall)

There are movement lines in panel 6, they're just hard to see. I think that maybe mixing the red and blue in the eyes like Gabe did on page 3 for panels 5-7 would've lent more action to panel 5 and made the transition to Carl walking in front of a car easier to follow, but I could be wrong.
It sure is funny how people berate CAD for over explaining every little thing
then complain how the new comic doesn't make sense and should have 6 extra frames to explain everything
I would say there's such a thing as a happy medium. It took me a few readings to understand was going on in this comic. Maybe I'm dense but I didn't even realize they were outside until I noticed the raindrops.
Okay, so yeah, I guess I am kind of dense. But still.
I'm now imaging a car zoom by like that in a bar and I am laughing.

It took me a cuople reads to figure out what Carl is doing here, but I guess he took control long enough to walk backwards into traffic, and put himself back to normal.
This explains it very well. The first couple times I looked at it, I thought that maybe the panels were intentionally out of order for some reason. But it makes a lot of sense that he may have gained momentary control.

I saw it as: When faced with hurting his partner, despite the fact that it wasn't really him doing it, professor was able to use that to marshall his faculties and take momentary control, stepped backwards into traffic in order to save his partner at the risk to himself. As he is hit he loses that momntary control, but the damage is done and the jarring on his system was enough for him to take full control back afterwards.
Or so we/he think. Will the virus rear its ugly head at an unopportune time in the coming conflict? Who knows?
Bum bum BUM!!
Tune in next time for the continued adventures of Automata. Same robot time, same robot channel.
It seems odd, especially after Lookouts, that people aren't willing to wait to see if something is revealed in the next strip that adds to your understanding. It might be a restriction of the medium. It's like a graphic novel, but when something amazing happens, you can't just quickly flip to the next page to get more info. It's like instead of going and buying a comic book, someone gives you one page every day and you have to wait.
for me the comfusing part is when he becomes nice and then he's just walking in the middle of the street. he's like "oh, nevermind about killing you, I'm going for a walk across the street now", wtf?

It would seem that Carl momentarily overpowered the virus, and then walked backwards into traffic in an attempt to save his partner, who would've died in a fight with him.

So in panel 6 he's moonwalking?
seems pretty obvious to me he's doing the robot.

Gabe really needs to work on his transitions between panels when he's trying to show actions. It's not something that happens a lot in PA, but when it does happen in things like CTS/Over-Easy/Automata, the action isn't as clear as it could be.
yeah, panel 6 is a little off. looks like he's strolling across the street with his hands in his pockets.

Actually it's exactly like buying a comic book
Just that the story details are more fleshed out becuase you have more pages
But most AWWW SHIT WHAT THE moments come at the end of a book and then you have to wait a fucking month to find out what happens now that Barracuda shot the Punisher's kid

Automata returns. Again! This series ends on Monday, if you were wondering - after which we will indulge in a full week of surprising (and inappropriate) Falcon Pawnches.
I love everything about this comic. I hope there's 10 more coming.
I agree that Gabe should work on his action transitions. But, I look at it from the standpoint that such a thing is something he normally does not have to deal with. Which just goes back to him mentioning back before the voting, that this was the hardest for him to draw. Always good to challenge ourselves.

Initially I thought that it was a second robot that happened to be crossing the road and got hit by a car and the trauma somehow caused the 'virus' to leap from Carl to this second hapless victim hence why he was blue-eyed before the car hit and the red-eyed just after it struck him and then we cut back to Carl who is now blue-eyed.
But the temporary control thing giving him just enough time to step back into traffic before the virus takes control again but too late to avoid getting a smack which then jolts it out of his system for good(?) seems to work better in context.
I like not knowing exactly what is going on in this one. It's a thriller after all, so a certain sense of mystery and trying to piece together what is happening is appropriate. The action isn't necessarily hard to follow, it's just that not knowing exactly how this virus works means that you don't necessarily know exactly why something has happened and as it's not a cartoon, you have to fill in the blanks yourself. If you make erroneous assumptions about the 'science' then you can misinterpret some panels.
Looking forward to the conclusion on Monday and I really do hope they do more with this in the future as they're suggesting.

To be fair if Mike and Jerry did that it wouldn't be fucking horrible.
This comic reminds me of the episode of Batman TAS where the Hardac Robot Batman kills himself for "murdering" Bruce Wayne.
So yeah awesome.
At least, I think it does?
All the same, great story and design.

It is unwise to even mention lookouts in this thread, for the trolls and their wharggglebargggle will be sure to follow.
I bet Detective Regal like dames in short skirts, a good scotch, and listening to the ballgame on the old timey radio station.

I don't think this is the end - it's still not clear who reprogrammed the Automata and why, etc.
On the other hand, Tycho said in the newspost that he has 5 pages to write - but does that include the introductory first page?

our analysts are coming up with an answer for you, sir
His son is already signed on to play Detective Regal
Not just today either, but continually...
I just love the art, panel three looks like something torn out of an introspective moment in a noir film
"Oh what a day, what a LOVELY DAY!"
The magnetic car must have wiped out the virus.

I mean, c'mon. Detective Regal.
But then again, who does?
