Network overhaul, help me name it

So, I'm currently pushing out Windows 7 on my network and decided that now is as good a time as any to push out new names.

I'm going for a galactic theme on the network, trying to stick to single name things, the Server is CENTRAL for CENTRAL POINT, relating to the center of my network. I have GAMING, MEDIA, and DESK-PC, these are the oens I want renamed to something galactic.

I know there are galaxies like Andromeda, Pegasus, but I was wondering what else there was that I could name these devices...

Gaming is my gaming computer, Media is my HTPC, and Desk-PC is an office computer that rarely gets used...

My wife's laptop is UNKNOWN for sneaky network purposes, and my netbook is going to be NULL, for equally sneaky purposes...

Well, not exactly related buy I like using the names Xerxes and Shodan. :)

(Edit: For those who don't get it, they're the A.I.'s in System Schock)

A quick google search on named stars, named craters of the moon, named moons of our solar system, named nebulas, etc etc will give you thousands upon thousands of names to choose from. Personally I look at the names of the craters on the moons or the landscape of mars whenever I need names, most of them have very beautiful ethereal names.

I know this is slightly off what you were thinking, but my college had some fun names.

Atlas was the main server for the blackboard service (holding up the world).
Holodeck was the virtual test server
Fossil was an old server used by CS kids to mess with UNIX kernels

    damn...I'm forgetting a bunch

My inclination would be to pick a sci-fi show/novel/universe you like and find appropriate space names based on that. For example, naming each computer after one of the 12 colonies in Battlestar Galactica, or a planet in Star Wars.

abstract response: name it the citadel, then name each device after the various systems (noveria, sigma tau cluster, etc)

utilitarian response: on a sizeable home network (not just a pc/mac and 360/ps3/wii) i find it helps to name things ROOM_DEVICE (like bedroom_pc livingroom_360 bedroom_360)

I use the names of the ships from Battlestar Galactica for mine. The Windows desktop is GALACTICA (old 'n' clunky), my MacBook is BASESTAR (sleek and classy), my iPod Touch is RAIDER (sits around plugged into the basestar), and my crappy iPod Nano I use for exercising is SCAR (kinda beat-up, but it gets the job done)

Servers at my school include the 4 email servers: John, Paul, George, and Ringo, two other servers with something to do with email, Mothra and Godzilla, and the various general purpose networks are all the word "black" in different languages (I have seen "black" and "kuro", and I've been told there are 3 more out there)

Trying to keep the names fairly simple for file access reasons...

I will admit that the Homegroup concept of Windows 7 is making me rethink that though, it's significantly easier to get at files on a network once they're in the homegroup

Thus far I've only renamed the gaming PC to POLARIS, gotta figure out a name for MEDIA and DESK-PC...

Good news is that my Home Server with the Power Pack 3 beta is properly detecting Windows 7 and backing everything up, and with the Media Center Connector, strapping itself right into MCE...

Thus far my mind is somewhat blown at just how inter connected everything currently is...

Bahaha, my wireless network at home has been named this for years.

    I named my in-laws' wireless network "virus.download."

That's great  . I use 'Garuda' for mine. Someone else here has theirs named 'Booyakasha' o_O

Firefly names are always appropriate. 'Inara' for your media, and 'Wash' for the desktop.

For some reason I've mixed alot of my names up.

The network is HAVEN, (cryptonomicron i think)
My PC is Wintermute - (William Gibson i think)
My PS3 will be mother (aliens:))

I never thought of doing virus.download, awesome. :^:
