Hello,

I'm a big fan of Penny Arcade, I've been to a couple PAX's and have my BYOC and PAX tickets for this year. I love reading the comic, and often forward them to various friends for their enjoyment.

I have one friend in particular who complains that you have to be so 'into' the culture that he can't get most of the jokes in the comics. I know I know, I morn for him.

That said, he happened upon today's comic (8/12/09) that sets up a joke re: Blizzard making things easier as time goes on, and ends up with a Vampire punchline.

he has asked me to decipher the contents of the comic so that he can understand the humor behind it. I have read the news articles, as often times that give hints but unfortunately, I think I'll have to reach out to the community for help explaining it to him.

Can you guys help with the vampire part? where does that come in? is it in reference to something? or is it just funny because it's so 'out there'?

anyway, thanks for any help on this!

See you at PAX 09!!

zWolf out.

It's basically saying "Six months later", except with a vampire, because, why not?

It's just absurdest. There's no hidden meaning or secret joke.

    It's just absurdest humor.

Personally, I found the absurdity of the vampire thing to play off the absurdity of Gabe's argument.

But then, if you agree with Gabe, you probably read it differently.

It also contrasts/intensifies the absurdity of Gabe's rage over Blizzard's making his video game easier.

His compatriot is a vampire now! What does it matter if the widgets in the game are more attainable for new players?

Right. I mean, that's a large part of what makes it so absurd. Gabes rage juxtaposed with Tycho's joining the ranks of the undead.

It's not Twisp and Catsby absurd... just playing off Gabes unwarranted rage.

    I didn't get it either.

Just chalk it up to "Noone is funny 100% of the time."

In the New Comic Thread in SE++, it was posited that Gabe is so upset at Blizzard in a game, but is quite complacent about his best friend joining the damned.

I thought the contrast of frothing-rage at having his work in a videogame devalued, versus his near complete indifference to Tycho's draculization were pretty funny. Plus, vampire!Tycho looks so awesome.

It took me a minute to get it too. The joke is about people who are obsessed with WoW culture to the point of ignoring issues outside of WoW, and how unfathomable they are to people who don't play WoW. Tycho doesn't play WoW, so the mount issue is something he doesn't know or care about (I think those of us who don't play WoW [anymore] and have friends who do and like to try to explain WoW mechanics to them can sympathize). Gabe doesn't see Tycho being a vampire as a significant problem when compared to the WoW news, even though he'll potentially be affected by it.
