    Yeah.

And that's compared to a mere 220 or so for the first game, right?

    Yeaaah.

I'm gonna stand by my position that the first game really was my favorite. It.. lost something after that. (Even though it technically gained something. 1300 somethings.)

The skill/item/rune unlocking was always the worst hurdle in PvP for casual players. They helped to alleviate the problem by adding Balthazar's faction and I guess later made PvE only skills in the GW:EN expansion. I do agree that they went way overboard with the addition of skills and classes. By the time Nightfall came out, I would never recommend the game to new players due to the fact they would be unlocking skills/items for months.

Even in the ORIGINAL game it took ages to unlock all the skills. I played the game for months, winning Halls a bunch of times, and never unlocked everything. (Got close though.)

    I tend to agree.

I mostly bought the expansion packs because other people in my Guild had done so and I wanted to keep playing the new content with them... the problem was a lot of it kinda sucked (in my opinion). The 12-man instances were particularly ugh.

Don't get me wrong, I still had fun, but not as much as with the first Guild Wars.

Yes. In the ORIGINAL game (everyone likes caps in this thread), the only way to unlock skills was through identifying the items, capturing elite skills, or buying the skills with a skill point and gold. The best way to get Balth's faction was through GvG. You could easily get 1000 per game.

Will Jeremy Soule be creating the soundtrack for GW2?

Guild War's soundtrack was one of the best, if not the best, feature of the game.

I would wager you never played in Guild vs Guild combat? The interface and combat system / objectives were better than any PvP game released in the last 6 years. I felt the PvE was pretty standard of most Diablo-esque games. I really fail to see how it is like a beta product.

I believe the man probably meant that he had a limited selection compared to other players, who had access to everything.

The annoying thing about Guild Wars PvP once the Expansions got going is the cost of entry. It's pretty expensive to buy all the expansion packs in order to gain access to all the skills.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you are asked for a certain skill and you don't have it you'd probably not be permitted to join the group.

Plus, there are just so many darn skills these days that it's extremely tough for a new player to learn all of them. There are probably, what, 800 or 900 now?

The original game was the best part, for me at least.

Still cheaper than WoW. No monthly fee. My point still stands though, the game being in BETA because you personally choose not to play the game/buy expansions is a really stupid thing to say.

The original had something like 451 or something, with the extra being res signet. A lot of the creep is down to new classes being added as well as PvE specific skills. A lot of the problems with skills came not from the skills themselves but the kinda groupthink that evolved with the game. You basically couldn't compete in PvP unless you were running a FotW build /or/ were with a really really good team. PvE was almost worse as there wasn't enough of a challenge to really worry about non-optimal builds but people would still scream bloody murder if you took Healing Breeze.

And I do think they did a lot to fix the skill issues with the PvP characters and the addition of faction for unlocking skills. It's pretty trivial now to get a build running. And there's a lot of room for casual PvP play with the Alliance Battles/Random or Team Arena and the Jade Quarry/Kurzick Forrest things where you can basically run any build and still do well.

A friend and I play almost every night. You're welcome to play with us whenever. We're in a guild of just us two :) We're going to beat Factions tonight, and then we plan on running through Nightfall. We got back into the game a month or so ago after an absence, so we're making up for lost time. Playing a few matches of Jade Quarry is great two in between the missions.

There was an attempted PA guild a few months back, but I think it died.

And for the record, I still love healing breeze.

That's definitely true. For the first few months, people were still trying a bunch of radical new builds and combinations - and if one combo was really good, Areanet would nerf it. Once another combo got good, Areanet nerfed it. And so on.

The game really is skill and team based...which eventually creates a super high barrier of entry. If you are new and don't know the right people, it's really tough to have fun in, say, the Halls of Heroes. Which is why I suspect that the last time I logged into the game (a year go?), there were just 2 HoH instances, instead of the many dozens I remember from when I was playing. The place is a wasteland compared to it's former glory. And I highly suspect that's more a fault of the groupthink than the game itself.

(Except I think that a good game does something to address negative groupthink.)

As I posted earlier upthread, I would love to get together with other PA-ers and do the EotN expansion if you have it. I have about 13 characters all over the map, so I wouldn't exactly be averse to running through the old content again, but I am currently internetless at home and it looks like I will continue to be through this weekend.

So, if you're still going next week, count me in! I am Neriah Gerasim &co. in game.

I have all the campaigns and EOTN. I've beaten everyone except EOTN, which I haven't played much yet. I'm waiting on my friend who wants to beat Factions/Nightfall first before tackling EOTN. So we're completing Factions together, me with one my Factions Elem, him with his Prophecies Mesmer. We have various other characters scattered around, including some brand new ones in Nightfall that we're playing as well.

Our job tonight is to beat the final two missions of Factions, then head over to Nightfall. But I don't think we'd be adverse to helping other people through missions or anything, or people joining up with us. Playing with people is always more fun than playing with Heroes/Henchies... well generally speaking. We're also doing the odd PvP matches here and there.

I'm "Geod of Exile" in game. I'm on now, playing some Aspenwood matches.

Maaan. GW2. Awesome. Very awesome. Tragically it's going to take me forever to download the 720p trailer and I refuse to watch it in anything less.

But man, did I ever play the shit out of GW. Mesmer was such a great experience, and with the right setup you could tear anything apart. I wasn't terrible at PvP, but I never had enough time/commitment to get into the guilds.

Everyone who's saying that the game went downhill with Nightfall, yes. Dervishes and Paragons were terricraptastic classes, and the desert, desert, more desert design was boring as hell. The Realm of Torment, however, was the only decent part of the entire game! So much awesome in there, and some serious challenges. Not to mention the inclusion of being able to control your henchmen, which was incredibly useful if you ever wanted to PvE without a full group. So it had some good concepts and wasn't entirely fail.

Man, even as hard as it was to get skills in the ORIGINAL, just feel lucky they didn't stick with some of the ideas they had in beta. Having to find skill crystals and incredibly rare skill rings to be able to permanently have a skill. And you could temporarily (for 1 mission) have a 9th skill if you used the skill crystal with a skill necklace. Fun times.

I actually liked the skill crystals, and the rings. But the method they went with in the end was the best IMO. They had some interesting things in Alpha too, that I'm glad they didn't go with in the end.

I'm still in the attempted PA guild and actually I'm now the guild leader! I can invite anyone if they want since we already have a guild hall (though I don't know what kind and what amenities it offers) and we can do the whole EotN thing or Nightfall or whatever. I have all the expansions but have only finished one of them so I am up for anything.

I've found quite the contrary with Dervish. They might not really be all that great primaries, but there are some skill combos here are there that are plenty fun. And shit, I'd be lying if I said I don't enjoy my Dervish.

    edit:

I'm currently the leader of an entirely dead guild named the Ping Island Lightning Strike Rescue Op, with a aqua cape bearing a fullsized yellow lightning bolt. My friends and I are large fans of The Life Aquatic. We've got a Wizard's Isle guild hall with some shit in it, I think. I'll have to double check.

I watched this trailer, and it made me happy - just the right amount of hype, backstory, and groovy music to catch my interest. However, I've never played Guild Wars before. I downloaded the trial last night, and started up an Elementalist, then went to bed while it downloaded 10,000 files.

So, anything I should know to maximize my time with the trial? Full game's pretty cheap these days, from what I remember.
