Buying a PS3: Get 160 GB now, or wait for 120 GB Slim?

edited August 2009 in Games and Technology
Hey all,

Figured I'd get some feedback from other gamers out there. With the recent Slim/price drop news, I have decided I'll definitely take the plunge and get myself a PS3.

What I'm trying to decide is if I should get a 160 GB PS3 today or tomorrow for $400, or wait for the Slim for $300. Here is what I see as the drawbacks and benefits:

Slim:
Drawbacks: Unproven SKU (could have technical issues), smaller hard drive, difficult to put vertical without a stand, no Linux installation possible, not available for 2-3 weeks
Advantages: Cheaper overall, obviously smaller and lighter, potentially quieter

160 GB:
Drawbacks: More expensive, bigger, potentially louder
Advantages: Comes with Uncharted and Pain, slightly bigger HD, proven and reliable hardware, can be stood vertical, can install Linux, available today

Obviously a lot of this is open to personal opinion, so what I'm really curious is - pretend you don't already own a PS3. Given this choice, what would you go with and why?

I'd go with the Slim. I don't want Linux or to set it upright or the game, Pain. The slightly smaller hard drive is no big deal IMO (it sounds massive considering I only have a 20GB on my 360) and with the extra $100 you save, you could easily pick up a cheap used copy of Uncharted and a few other good games.

Linux and hard drive space aren't really my major concerns. My biggest concern is probably hardware reliability.

The slim looks sexy, but there's really no guarantee as to how reliable it will prove to be a year or more down the line. The big box may be big and bulky, but it's also proven to be very reliable.

Then of course there's the fact I'm impatient and don't necessarily want to wait half a month :P

The PS3 is whisper quiet. If you can hear it while playing, there's something wrong. So the slim being potentially quieter means very little.

Nobody here can guarantee you PS3 Slim reliability, and all other factors are a matter of preference and opinion, so I don't know what advice you're looking for.

I personally wouldn't wait, and have no regrets buying an original version. It's virtually silent and I have more than enough room for it on my TV stand.

So if you desperately need to save a few square inches in your living room, and think the savings are worth it, then wait. If you have a few square inches to spare, like shiny over matte, feel comfortable with the current reliability, and aren't worried about a few extra bucks, then go ahead and buy a PS3 fat.

I have to say that I like the reduced power consumption - though, I'm not sure how it compares to today's ps3...hirai's conference specified the release model in there comparison.

Also, it's my understanding the old ps3's price is dropping?

All PS3's drop by the same amount. 80gb PS3's drop by $100us to $299, 160gb PS3's drop by $100us to $399. The slim will be $299us when it launches, but all PS3's officially drop in price by $100us on August 19th.

i think you should decide which one looks better. if i was coming in to the generation now i'd get a slim, because i think it's pretty sexy, but i know some people are turned off by the matte finish and oldschool power/eject buttons

Can't help but disagree. I just don't understand why anyone would fret over something that's just going to sit on a cabinet.

That said, I have noted that several people don't like that the old glossy finish collects fingerprints and is susceptible to scratching, so those who don't like the matte finish should consider that.

Hard drive space isn't really an issue either. I got an original 60GB PS3 when they were discounted/discontinued and I recently threw in a 200+ GB HD. Though I don't know if the slim is upgradable.

It is. The access point is at the front now though.

FWIW, I have decided to buy a Slim either 6 months if no issues or when they start making one that doesn't have the horrible fault that my Xbox owning self expects from a first run.

While there are other reasons I don't own a 360, one of them was actually that it wouldn't go with my otherwise all-black setup (without splurging even more for an Elite). Obviously this wasn't the deciding factor or anything... but it is a factor.

Well the Elite is supposedly going down to 299$ itself soon so well see what happens eh?

And on that note. Totally buying a PS3 next month. Oh yes. Finally.

I really doubt that they'll be less reliable than a normal PS3. They've reduced the RSX and Cell's chip size, which means it's quieter, uses less power and produces less heat. That in turn usually means there's less likelihood of shit melting inside.

I'm guessing that the most common problem with the PS3 Slim will be Blu-Ray drives fucking up, which is also the most common problem with other PS3's.

I'm kinda interested in buying a PS3 Slim for Blu Ray now that I have a 1080p HD TV.

I guess we'll see how it goes. And hard drives are cheap and supposedly easy enough to replace, so picking up the 120gb one isn't an issue.

I am getting the Slim once it is released, personally. I like the less power consumption and the price, and I can't imagine it would be any less reliable than the previous editions. Usually, slimmer versions tend to be more reliable and better put together.

Depends when my friends force me to play Demon's Souls with them. I really wanna hold out a few months to see how the slim performs though.

It really is hard to say that the slim is any improvement other than power and space savings at this point, i think.

    I'm getting a Slim.

My PS2 Fat started going downhill after just a couple of years, but I replaced it with a PS2 Slim and that thing is still going strong as we speak. I expect it to be the same with the PS3. The Slim will rock.

The 160 doesn't have it either, so unless he's also considering picking up a used one, it doesn't really enter into the equation.

I have heard Pain is fun multiplayer. I have yet to try that, though.

So, what games would you say to purchase with it? I mean, I have no clue considering I haven't considering buying a PS3 until now.

I'm thinking MGS4 but I also want to know about a good RPG. Are there any good RPG's even out.

Personally, I'm looking forward to the PS3 slim. I never owned an original PS1 or PS2, and instead got the slim models when they came out. This hasn't been on purpose, I'm usually just too poor or too cheap to get them when they first come out. After the slim models come out, there's usually nice backlog of games that are reasonably priced, and they have usually been rock-solid. If anything, the PS3 slim seems to be coming out really early.

Yeah, furthermore, you'll save a good amount in electricity with the 1/3 savings in power, which, might not sound a lot, but for someone who has experimented with how low he can get his electric bill by unplugging cellphone charges and making certain anything not in use with a clock on it... All those savings REALLY add up over the course of a month.
