Car Help: "Click-click-click" When I want 'vroom'

I know I should get this checked out but I want to get a general idea of the problem before I go into a shop and get taken for a ride. (ON THE MONEY TRAIN OF COURSE)

Mazda 323, 1993, (I ride in style)

Alright, so the sound is coming from the front of my car, and is only there when I am coasting or at very low speeds, it has no bearing on whether I am turning, but seems to happen more when I am braking (but the sound occurs without any pressure on the brakes at all still).

Its a low toned clicking noise that has been getting slightly worse for a few days.

Braking is still steady, with no grinding noise, my front pads are a bit worn, but not too bad.

Can you helpful folks give me some ideas as to what this could be?

-Thanks.

    nail in the tire?

Can you tell what direction it's coming from? left or right? Do you hear it more inside the cab, or out the window?

Does the speed of the clicking increase with the speed of the car?

click...click...click when pulling out, and click...click..click.click-click-click when accelerating?

Had this happen on my '95 blazer (styyylleee)
It was worn wheel bearings on my tire. The clicking was very similar to what you describe.
Get it fixed, it can become much worse. I ignored mine, and eventually it was like:

    SKRRRREEEEBRBRRBBKBRKBRKBBKKKKKBBKBKBKBBBRRKBKBKRRBSKRREEEEEEEEEEEDDDKKKDDDEEESEEE

They didn't know how my tire was still on

Edit: I don't know these fanciful car terms so Tire, Wheel and Spinnydeal are all interchangeable.

Inside the cab, I think, the noise does not speed up with the speed of the car, its intermittant the whole time, and wheel bearings are on the list of possibilities now, thanks.

Wheel bearings - Pretty hard to change on your own, and require specific tools you most likely don't have. I'd take it to a mechanic.

Tire is the rubber bit, wheel is the metal bit, spinnydeal are those cool chrome thingies you can get so it looks like your wheels are still turning when you're at a stoplight. =)

But yeah, sounds like a wheel bearing issue. You could do it yourself, but (and don't take this the wrong way) if you couldn't diagnose it, you're probably better off letting a professional fix it.

To add yet another voice, wheel bearings. I had a 323, and that shitty thing at through wheel bearings like mad. I replaced them about once a year. We did it ourselves once, and when they wore out a year later, we figured it was because we did a shitty job repacking them. The next time, we got it done at a shop, and they wore out again in less than a year. Then we sold the car.

    So good luck.
