I hear the PS3 might have games

So i have been doing the XBOX thing and PC thing for several years at this point. However, I accidentally convinced my wife to purchase a big screen TV and suddenly blue ray looks incredibly appealing. Since the launch of this generation i have not given any attention to any Sony games, so beyond the big name releases i have limited knowledge of what games are considered gold.

On XBOX/PC I love Morrowind/Oblivion, Fallout 1-3, Mass effect <3<3<3 , Starcraft, Forza 2, Fable 2 etc. Beyond Little Big Planet and Grand Turismo none demo version, what games should i be looking for or looking forward to.

If this thread is misplaced D: or whatever please feel free to ridicule me.

Awesome exclusive games for PS3 that I can attest to being awesome (in alphabetical order):

Afrika (Import, but your PS3 is region-free)
    Buzz! Quiz TV
    Cuboid
    Folklore
Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds
    Infamous
    Ninja Gaiden Sigma
    Pixeljunk Eden
Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
Ratchet and Clank Future: Quest for Booty
    Shatter
    SingStar
    Trash Panic
    Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
    Valkyria Chronicles

Exclusive games that I weren't that fond of, but other people will attest to their awesomeness:

    Crash Commando
    Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice
    The Eye of Judgment
    Fat Princess
    Flower
    Gran Turismo 5: Prologue
    Heavenly Sword
    Killzone 2
    LittleBigPlanet
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
    MotorStorm: Pacific Rift
    Pixeljunk Monsters
    Resistance: Fall of Man
    Resistance 2
    SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation
    Savage Moon
    Siren: Blood Curse
    Super Stardust HD
    Wipeout HD
    Zen Pinball

Exclusive awesome (more than likely) games that are coming out:

Final Fantasy XIII (technically not an exclusive anymore, but come on, this thing was built for the PS3 from the ground up. I really have severe doubts about the 360 port)
    Final Fantasy Versus XIII
    God of War III
    Gran Turismo 5
    Heavy Rain
    Katamari Forever
    The Last Guardian
MAG (kinda skeptical on this one)
    Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2
    Pixeljunk Shooter
Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time
    Topatoi (Europe already has this)
    Twisted Metal
    Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
    White Knight Chronicles

    That's debatable.

I'd say they're adding and changing enough to differentiate it.

I heard some rumor about an RTS or turn based awesomeness that came out recently (+ or - 3 years) on the PS3 that can be hard to find. Would that be Valkry something something? Also is it interesting.

    Valkyria chronicles.

It's an SRPG, though, not an rts. It is turn based though.

    Personal fave PS3 exclusives:

Valkyria Chronicles. Yep, me too. Try the demo.

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Good idea to play this before Uncharted 2 hits in October. Try the demo, but don't judge the game based on it - lots of people HATE the demo (myself included) and love the game.

Siren: Blood Curse. Probably one of my top all-time PS3 titles. Try the demo, but the game is much, much better.

Metal Gear Solid 4. Some folks who've never played a MGS loved it, but I feel more secure reccomending it if you've played 1-3. ...I think there's a demo.

Infamous. Platformer/third person shooter/open world hybrid. Excellent demo.

Little Big Planet. Is an aquired taste - I like it, but it is - almost literally - all my older brother plays. No demo available.

Killzone 2. A very different FPS. Try the demo.

    Ratchet & Clank Future. Demo.

    Small PS3 text field = 2 posts (sorry, if that's a deal-breaker - a-hyuk!)

    Awesome upcoming exclusives.

    Demon's Souls.
    The Japanese take on a western-style dungeon-crawling action-RPG.

MAG. I'm not much for shooters, but the beta is a helluva lot of fun. No lag! Very impressive, feels very balanced.

Uncharted 2. This is the Big Daddy, the probably-will-be-GOTY. There will be a multiplayer demo (I think), but not for single-player.

    Ratchet & Clank Future 2. See; R&C:F 1.

...and then you've got stuff like God of War III, Heavy Rain, Last Guardian, yadda yadda yadda. They will all be spectacular, but it will shock the world if Heavy Rain sells over a million copies.

As some one who imported Demon's Soul the game is fantastic. Warning you though it can be frustrating at times. The whole valley of defilment zone hurts so good.

Valkyira Chronicles is the exact polar oposite, visualy very bright and colorful. A whole lot of story opposed to a thin layer of plot. The difficulty honestly is preaty mild.

Both games a fantastic though and judging from what you've gotten on xbox you'll probly enjoy both of them.

Also Motorstorm Pasific Rift is a blast verry arcady though.

That is a pretty attractive PS3 sell. If I had disposable cash I would buy one. How is it as a media device? Can you download movies and tv shows or stream Netflix (or something equivalent or better)? I hate my half broken, loud and ugly (I guess you can't avoid that with any console this gen) 360 but xbox live (and money) keeps me beholden to it.

There's a service called PlayOn that lets you stream media through your PS3, including Netflix. I haven't tried it myself, but a guy at work who has a PS3 just bought it and claims it to be excellent, and I trust his word. The only thing is, unlike Netflix streaming on 360, there is no HD streaming. DVD-quality, though.

That site has a 14-day free trial, after that it's $40 to buy the full version.

If you just want to stream media from your PC, that's easy enough to do as well, you just need a program on your PC to do so. I run TVersity through my PS3 and it works fantastically.

Also there is a ton of movies and tv shows you can download off the psn. But you can only "rent" HD quality. Realy havn't messed with it too much and unlike the rest of psn content you only get one download per purchase which kinda sucks.

Well, graphically it's nothinig to write home about. The character models look great, and I can think of nothing specific to complain about, but it doesn't have KZ2/BioShock's "wow" factor, for visuals and art direction.

But everything looks the way it should. You're able to slip into the world and function very easily, because it just manages to plug into your perceptions of how this, that and the other should work.

The lack of lag is very, very impressive.

The cooperative aspect is very well-realized. If you do what your squad commander tells you to, you get an XP bonus which means you level up faster - so there's incentive to follow orders. Air strikes, gas strikes, helis, tanks, APCs - all controlled by squad leaders or commanders.

The battles are huuuge, but it never feels unfair. It's a bit of a tactics/twitch hybrid shooter. So yeah, I'm having fun with it - even though I rerolled my character 4 times.

But I suppose I should note: I don't see myself buying MAG. A game shines a little brighter when it's free.

I mean, this is the first Beta - private Beta - it's nowhere near finished or polished up yet. But still, next spring I can promise you, I'm buying Darksiders, Bayonetta, BioShock 2, Heavy Rain and God of War.

I won't need MAG, I'll have more than my share of awesome and perhaps a measure of debt as well :P

If PlayOn works and doesn't fuck you in the ass this is a huge sell for the PS3. Lack of HD streaming is a downside but I'm pretty happy with DVD quality and I'm using a 720p device for output anyway. I'm surprised Sony hasn't made this a part of the package--which makes me a bit skeptical. In any case I'm pretty sold on the device at this point. I'm stuck between buying a new 360 since my DD is broken (3rd time) for 199 and a totally new console for 299. I do love xbox live though...

They haven't made it part of the package, I'm sure, because it's not specifically for the PS3. I mean, this is from their front page:
If you have a PLAYSTATION 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, Moxi HD DVR, NETGEAR ITV2000, HP MediaSmart TV, or other DLNA-compliant device, PlayOn lets you watch Netflix, Hulu, CBS, YouTube, CNN, ESPN and more on your TV.

I just tried out the PlayOn service, and watched a few things in my Instant Queue to make sure (The Office, Lost, A Few Good Men), and they all work and look absolutely fine.

The only thing is that loading your actual Instant Queue and browsing is noticeably slower than on 360. It's done straight from the XMB, go to Video, then up to the top near the media servers.

It was really easy to set up, too. I just downloaded it, installed it, it asked for my Netflix user account and password, I turned on the PS3, went to Video and it was there.

The rewind/fast forward is slower than the 360 as well.

Fuck. I should buy this shit for my 360 just to get Hulu and ESPN on my TV without having to deal with connecting my laptop. I'll say one thing. If I was going to buy a new console tomorrow I'd get a PS3.

Edit. OH FUCK. I need a PC to make it work and I am stuck with a mac laptop.

PlayOn is very cool. Used the free trial back in January and in June there was a coupon making it $20 so I bought it up. Its neat watching Hulu and if you get the Gametrailers plugin, game reviews on the PS3 between games and such. Just wish the program had a better updater. Instead you have to download and install the newest version each time it comes out instead of a normal patch.

Also these threads are getting upsurd. Yeah Megethrads suck ass but seeing "What should I get for the PS3/X360/PC/DS/Penis" every TWO days is just silly. Use the search function or at least go back one or two pages people.

They should just put up three sticky threads with must have games for each one.

It does seem like the new PS3 buyers are the biggest culprits.

Good to see the console getting attention. Who knows, maybe they'll actually write a CRPG for it one day.

Speaking of which, jesus christ how do you play this game?! I've finished the first dungeon (1-1) but all the others I've tried (2-1 and 3-1) are absurdly hard. To top it off, they just throw you into the game and expect you to understand all the stats, what stats you need to level up, what equipment you need, etc. I haven't played a game with such an absurd learning curve for years.

    Anyway, here's my lists:

    Highly Recommended Retail Exclusives
    inFamous
    Killzone 2
    LittleBigPlanet
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

    Pixeljunk Eden (+Encore)
    Pixeljunk Monsters (+Encore)
Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty
    Shatter
    Super Stardust HD
    Wipeout HD (+Fury)

    Upcoming Exclusves

Exclusive awesome (more than likely) games that are coming out:

    Heavy Rain
    The Last Guardian
    Demon's Souls

These games are the reason I went out and picked up a slim yesterday. Not only was I a huge fan of Indigo Prophecy, but I'd never be able to forgive myself if I missed Team Ico's next game.

There are a few exclusives that are out now that I'm excited to try (hi, InFamous!), but it's the next year or so of releases that I'm really excited about.

    Plus, you know. Blu Ray.

You could've thrown in Dead Space, Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection, Mirror's Edge and Prince of Persia. All quality games, though I didn't bother listing them because he's already apparently got a 360 and probably knows about them already.

MundaneSoul: You'd be doing yourself a detriment if you didn't at least rent most (if not all) of the games I mentioned. Check out the demos/trailers for the PSN games listed too, the PSN has some really interesting and unique games on it.

It is quite daunting, part of the reason my progress through the game has been slow is that there's a lot of trial and error involved. Best advice I can give is, the worlds don't increase in difficulty the way you'd expect, for example 3-1 is quite a bit harder than 4-1. So go for 1-2 first (take out the dragon at some point if you can), then maybe 2-1 and 4-1 after that. Ranged weapons/magic are really important. Don't worry too much about losing the souls you've collected, it's pretty easy to build them back up again once you know the layouts of each level.

As some one who imported Demon's Soul the game is fantastic. Warning you though it can be frustrating at times. The whole valley of defilment zone hurts so good..

Demon's Souls is awesome. So fucking awesome.
In fact it's so awesome I'd be tempted to buy it again if it ever gets an EU release.

It's an unforgiving game, that's for sure, but its so rewarding when you succeed.

There is a running thread here and a wiki here (wiki is down at the moment.)
