5.1 Surround Sound Recommendation

I've currently got a Logitech 5.1 surround sound system (model number X-530). It produces great, loud sound with FANTASTIC bass but that is actually the problem. You can't turn the bass down very low. It doesn't really bother me but it pisses of my neighbors mighty quick. I can be watching Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and they can hear it - even with it turned down to a low volume with the lowest bass setting.

I got in the $100 price range - and being an audio noob I don't need something super fancy, but wouldn't mind paying a bit more than $100.

Any recommendations for a speaker system that can hit high volume without necessarily having the bass pounding? Thanks.

You need something with an external subwoofer.

Is... this for a pc setup?

It's for a laptop. The speakers are predominently used for watching TV and music, I don't have enough time to game.

This is what I have now.

Since I'm not sure how everything is plugged in, can't you unplug the subwoofer?

the bass gives your audio/music depth... you can get a setup with just mid-range/high speakers, but it's going to sound like ass

have you considered headphones? a good wireless setup will let you play the thing as loud as you want, and still have the freedom to move around

You can't unplug the subwoofer. The speaker with the power button/volume is connected to the sub and if you unplug that - all of the satalies stop working as well.

I hadn't considered the option of wireless headphones - that's not a bad idea at all.

It may be possible to reduce the bass output on the producing device's side. How are they plugged in and on what do you watch your movies?

If you go to the Sound panel, Playback tab, select Speakers, press Properties, go to the Tone tab, and you'll find sliders for bass and treble.
